About

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for Dreamcast is a survival-horror adventure released in 2001 by Darkworks and Infogrames. It is the fourth main Alone in the Dark game, bringing paranormal investigator Edward Carnby back for a self-contained case built around a remote Massachusetts island. The Dreamcast release arrived in North America on September 24, 2001 and presents the story through cinematic scenes, fixed viewpoints, atmospheric pre-rendered locations, and real-time character models. Rather than continuing a previous plot directly, it uses Carnby and its Gothic-horror roots as the basis for a new mystery.

The investigation begins after Carnby's friend and partner Charles Fiske is found dead near Shadow Island. His search had involved three ancient tablets, and Carnby is asked to pursue the missing clues and discover what happened to Fiske. He travels with Aline Cedrac, a university professor looking for answers of her own concerning Professor Obed Morton. A creature attacks their aircraft over the island, separating the pair on their descent. Carnby reaches the woods around a decaying manor while Aline lands elsewhere on the estate, and their routes eventually cross as the danger beneath Shadow Island becomes clearer.

At the outset, players select either Carnby or Aline, making this a single-player game with two linked campaigns rather than a cooperative mode. Their stories share important places and events but emphasize different approaches. Carnby's route leans more heavily on confrontations, while Aline's has a stronger puzzle focus. Searching rooms, examining documents, collecting key items, and combining discoveries open the way through the manor, its grounds, and the island's underground spaces. The choice of protagonist consequently changes the order and context in which parts of the story are encountered.

Light is the central survival tool in Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. Shadow Island's hostile creatures thrive in darkness, so a flashlight is useful both for exploring unlit scenery and for exposing details that would otherwise remain hidden. Ammunition and weapons also reflect that theme: Carnby can use light-based ammunition, including magnesium bullets and phosphorus shells, against enemies that cannot simply be treated as ordinary targets. This gives exploration, combat, and resource use a common purpose. The player must look closely at the environment, preserve useful supplies, and decide when illumination or firepower is the appropriate answer.

The Dreamcast version pairs its controlled, deliberate movement and menu-based inventory with a visual presentation designed around contrast. Characters move through 3D spaces placed against pre-rendered backdrops, and the flashlight can brighten portions of those scenes and cast character shadows. That technical approach supports the game's detective-horror mood: a corridor, staircase, or garden can conceal an object, passage, or threat until the player turns toward it with light. Cutscenes, voice performances, creature encounters, environmental puzzles, and the shifting camera angles all serve the island investigation rather than turning the game into a straight action adventure.

As a late Dreamcast survival-horror release, The New Nightmare sits alongside other 2001 versions for PlayStation, Windows, and Game Boy Color, but it remains a distinct console presentation of Darkworks' game. It is also separate from the compact Game Boy Color adaptation, which was developed by Pocket Studios and changes the scope of the experience. For Dreamcast players, the defining appeal is the full Shadow Island investigation: choose Carnby or Aline, trace the fate of Fiske and the tablets, and use light as both a clue-finding instrument and a defense against the darkness.
