About
Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame for Super NES is a single-player cinematic platform adventure released in 1996. It is Titus Software's console adaptation of Jordan Mechner's 1993 sequel to the original Prince of Persia, bringing the Prince's next battle with the sorcerer Jaffar to Nintendo's 16-bit system. The story begins shortly after the first game: having saved the Princess, the Prince expects a reward, only to be magically changed into the likeness of a beggar while Jaffar assumes his identity and takes control of the palace.
The Prince escapes the city and begins a long journey through hostile locations in search of a way back to Persia. His quest carries him from palace passages and shipboard danger to strange islands, caverns, ruins, temples, and Jaffar's domain. Along the way, the adventure introduces supernatural threats as well as returning human guards, while the Princess is left vulnerable to Jaffar's magic. The game continues the original's blend of Persian-fantasy atmosphere and wordless environmental storytelling, using encounters and hazards to propel its larger sequel narrative.
At its core, Prince of Persia 2 on SNES is built around deliberate movement. Players run across gaps, make standing or running jumps, climb ledges, crouch through confined spaces, and carefully judge momentum and distance before attempting a dangerous crossing. Pressure plates, crumbling floors, spikes, gates, and other traps turn rooms into navigation puzzles. Failure is part of learning each sequence: safe footing, timing, and the order in which switches are activated all matter as the Prince presses onward through scrolling stages.
Sword combat adds another challenge when guards and creatures block the route. The Prince can draw his blade, advance, retreat, attack, parry, and counter while watching an opponent's actions and the limited space around him. Enemies are a more regular presence than in the first Prince of Persia, so a stage can shift from careful acrobatics to close-quarters dueling without warning. Magic potions also remain important, with their effects making exploration, survival, and experimentation part of the progression.
The Super NES version preserves the game's recognizable animated action and much of its expanded fantasy setting, while presenting it in the console's own visual and audio format. It is not simply identical to the earlier computer release: Titus's adaptation omits some content, including levels from that version and its final level. That makes Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame a distinct 16-bit edition of the sequel rather than a complete replacement for the original 1993 release.
As the direct follow-up to the landmark 1989 game, this Super NES release retains the series' hallmark tension between flowing animation and unforgiving hazards. It asks players to observe a room, commit to precise inputs, and recover from the consequences of a missed leap or poorly timed sword strike. For players exploring the Prince of Persia series on Super Nintendo, it offers a later chapter in the original 2D continuity: a larger, more combat-focused quest that develops the Prince, the Princess, and Jaffar's conflict before the franchise moved into later eras.
