About
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei is a Super Famicom role-playing compilation that revisits the first two Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei games. Published by Atlus in Japan in 1995, it brings the 1987 and 1990 Famicom adventures together in a single release, with Opera House handling the Super Famicom version.
The opening game follows high-school student Akemi Nakajima after the demon-summoning program he created unleashes forces from another realm. Joined by Yumiko Shirasagi, he enters hostile labyrinths to confront the demons behind the invasion. Its exploration is presented from a first-person dungeon-crawling viewpoint, placing the party in twisting corridors and encounter-filled chambers.
Battles use the series' early turn-based structure, with human party members supported by demons. Players can attempt to recruit enemies through negotiation, then call on those allies for combat help. Managing weapons, items, money, magnetite, and a growing demon roster is central to surviving the dungeons, while demon fusion can produce new allies.
Megami Tensei II moves to a post-apocalyptic setting shaped by a devastating nuclear catastrophe. Its unnamed protagonist belongs to the Devil Busters, a group that fights demons in a ruined world. The sequel expands the journey with a top-down perspective for parts of exploration while retaining its demanding role-playing battles and supernatural focus.
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei updates both games for the 16-bit hardware rather than simply presenting the Famicom originals unchanged. The release features reworked graphics, revised interface elements, redrawn demon art, and arranged music. Some areas of the first game's dungeons were also redesigned.
The compilation adds quality-of-life features associated with the later Super Famicom Megami Tensei games, including a save and teleportation Terminal system. It also connects the two included adventures as a single package, preserving the original stories while giving their presentation a more unified look.
Originally released only in Japan, Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei remains a look back at the formative entries that established many enduring Megami Tensei ideas: occult science fiction, demon negotiation, party management, and dangerous dungeon exploration. It later returned in Japan as a Wii Virtual Console release.
