About
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is Sega’s 1990 single-player platform game starring Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Developed and published by Sega, the 16-bit original begins when the witch Mizrabel abducts Minnie and takes her to the Castle of Illusion. Mickey follows her to the castle, where its displaced former king explains that the only way to overcome the witch is to gather the seven Gems of the Rainbow. The game launched in Japan in November 1990 and is also known there as I Love Mickey Mouse: Fushigi no Oshiro Daibōken.
The adventure is a side-scrolling platformer built around running, jumping, and making careful use of Mickey’s bounce attack. He can defeat many foes by landing on them, and a second midair input or a downward press turns the jump into the more forceful bounce. Apples, marbles, and candles collected along the way can be thrown at enemies, obstacles, and certain walls, offering both a ranged option and a reason to search each scene. Mickey can also duck, make longer running jumps, swim upward, and grab ropes, so movement changes with the hazards placed in each area.
A castle hallway leads through five doors, each opening onto a different illusion-filled world. The Enchanted Forest mixes crawling vegetation, poisonous flowers, webs, and rope swings; Toyland fills its spaces with animated soldiers, clowns, and toy aircraft. The Storm tests movement around water and breaking bridges, while the Library makes Mickey small among oversized books, jars, teacups, and household objects. These stages contain multiple scenes and culminate in confrontations with Mizrabel’s Masters of Illusion as Mickey works toward the gems and the route to the witch’s tower.
Castle of Illusion also gives its platforming a light resource and scoring layer. Mickey has a power gauge and a limited number of tries, while stars restore power and mouse-ear items award extra tries. Projectiles are worth preserving because the amount remaining can affect the end-of-level secret bonus, alongside bonuses for clearing a level and retaining power. The options include Practice, Normal, and Hard settings: Practice presents a shorter three-level quest for three gems, whereas Normal and Hard require the full five-world search for all seven, with fewer starting power spheres at the higher difficulty.
This is specifically the 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive version, whose stages, enemies, controls, and presentation differ from Sega’s later 8-bit Master System and Game Gear game of the same name. It was the opening entry in Sega’s Mickey Mouse Illusion series, followed on Genesis by World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The original later appeared in the 1998 Sega Saturn compilation Sega Ages: Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck and was included on the Sega Genesis Mini, while a separately designed 3D-leaning remake arrived in 2013 for newer platforms. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse remains a compact Sega platform adventure centered on its own 1990 level design and mechanics.
