About

Excitebike - Bun Bun Mario Battle is a Nintendo motocross racing game for the Japan-only Satellaview service, the satellite-broadcast peripheral for Super Famicom. Released in 1997 under the longer Japanese title Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium, it revisits the side-scrolling racing format of Nintendo's 1984 Excitebike while giving the event a Super Mario character theme. Rather than presenting a new Mario platform adventure, this is a compact, competition-focused remake built around dirt tracks, jumps, speed management, and careful landings.

The action keeps the essential Excitebike rhythm. Players guide a motorcycle along a scrolling course, changing lanes to negotiate the road and using acceleration and turbo to carry momentum through a race. Uneven terrain makes every jump a small test of control: landing the bike cleanly helps preserve speed, while a poor landing can cost precious time or bring a crash. The challenge is not simply holding the accelerator, but choosing a line through traffic and obstacles while managing the pace of a run.

Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium changes the cast most visibly. Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Wario, Toad, and members of Bowser's Koopa Troop are used in place of the original game's anonymous motocross riders. That substitution gives the familiar races a distinctly Mario presentation without changing the basic objective of getting around each course efficiently. It also makes the game an unusual meeting point for two Nintendo traditions: the older Excitebike racing design and the characters more commonly associated with the Super Mario series.

The Satellaview version adds features that distinguish it from the NES original. Coins are placed around the courses, and collecting them contributes to the racer's performance by raising top speed. It also includes a SUPER mode that provides unlimited turbo, removing the usual concern of overheating the engine and changing how a player approaches a course. These additions make route choice more important: a racer can weigh the direct path against chasing coins, while SUPER mode emphasizes aggressive acceleration and maintaining control over the jumps.

Nintendo distributed the game in four Stadium installments through the Satellaview broadcast service, beginning in May 1997 and continuing with later broadcasts that year. As a Satellaview release, it was made for a delivery system available only in Japan rather than sold as a conventional Super Famicom cartridge. That context is central to its identity: Excitebike - Bun Bun Mario Battle is both a Mario-themed take on a foundational Nintendo racer and a snapshot of the experimental broadcast games created for Satellaview owners.

For players exploring the Excite series, the game belongs alongside the original Excitebike rather than the later 3D entries such as Excitebike 64. Its appeal lies in how clearly it preserves the older game's direct arcade-style design while adapting it to a different Nintendo setting and a short-lived service. The combination of lane-based motocross racing, Mario characters, coin collection, and unlimited-turbo SUPER mode gives this Satellaview title its own place in Nintendo's 1990s catalogue.
