About
Panel De Pon Event '98 Satellaview is a Japanese puzzle-game broadcast built from Intelligent Systems and Nintendo's Panel de Pon. It was delivered through the Super Famicom's Satellaview service on December 28, 1997, rather than sold as a conventional cartridge release. This compact event edition belongs to the same color-panel matching lineage later known internationally through Tetris Attack and the Puzzle League series, but it is specifically the original Panel de Pon presentation and a deliberately limited broadcast version.
The essential playfield asks the player to move a cursor and swap neighboring colored panels. Lines of three or more matching panels, made horizontally or vertically, disappear; panels above then fall into the opened space. That simple exchange creates the game's tactical heart: a quick swap can clear an immediate obstruction, while a well-timed setup can make falling panels form further clears. The advancing stack keeps each decision urgent, so success depends on reading the board, recognizing likely connections, and acting before the panels reach the top.
Panel De Pon Event '98 focuses its solo content on Stage Clear. Instead of presenting the full story-led selection associated with the standard Super Famicom Panel de Pon, it offers a short five-stage route. The objective is to remove panels beneath the boundary line in each puzzle-like board, rewarding careful planning as much as quick reactions. Its stage sequence omits Lip's stage, an important distinction from the complete release and a reminder that this was tailored for a particular Satellaview event rather than meant to replace the retail game.
A two-player versus mode supplies the other major option. Two people work on separate boards, racing to make clears and construct chains while the rising panels steadily increase the pressure. The edition does not include the character-specific background scenes of the full game, keeping the presentation lean and concentrating attention on the competitive panel action. That pairing of a concise solo challenge and direct local competition makes the broadcast feel more like a focused event program than a broad package of modes.
The title should not be confused with BS Yoshi no Panepon, the separate Satellaview version that used the Yoshi-themed localization of Tetris Attack, nor with later Pokémon Puzzle League games. Panel De Pon Event '98 keeps its connection to the Japanese Panel de Pon branch and preserves a small but distinctive part of Satellaview's catalogue: a Nintendo puzzle game distributed through a satellite service, in a form shaped by the constraints and purpose of its original broadcast.
