About

Tekken 2 is Namco's 1995 arcade fighting game and the second chapter of the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Developed and published by Namco for its System 11 arcade hardware, this version arrived in arcades in August 1995, following the original Tekken by less than a year. It builds on the series' early polygonal combat presentation while expanding the rivalries around the Mishima family. The story begins after Kazuya Mishima has defeated his father, Heihachi, and assumed control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Kazuya announces a new tournament, drawing fighters with their own motives into a conflict that also gives Heihachi a chance to seek revenge.

Like the first Tekken, Tekken 2 is a one-on-one fighter for one or two players. Its control layout assigns a separate button to each limb—left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick—so combinations are built from direct relationships between a character's arms and legs instead of broad strength or kick buttons. Players use a directional control to walk, crouch, jump, guard, reposition, and launch attacks, then learn throws, strings, and character-specific techniques through repeated matches. Rounds take place on three-dimensional stages viewed from a fixed side-on fighting perspective, with the opponent defeated by draining their health or winning the required rounds.

The arcade roster returns many competitors from Tekken and introduces several new faces. Jun Kazama enters the tournament while pursuing Kazuya, while Lei Wulong joins as a police officer and Baek Doo San brings taekwondo to the cast. Bruce Irvin, JACK-2, Roger, Alex, Angel, and Devil Kazuya broaden the selection further. Familiar fighters such as Kazuya, Heihachi, Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, Yoshimitsu, King, Marshall Law, and Lee Chaolan each bring distinct fighting styles and move sets. Some combatants and bosses are not initially available, giving arcade players an incentive to keep playing and discover more of the lineup.

Tekken 2 adds depth to its predecessor's close-range combat with options including back throws, chain throws, and selected reversal techniques. Kazuya and Heihachi have a sidestep that lets them evade along the depth of the arena, while running tackles are more dangerous when initiated from farther away. These additions matter because each character approaches spacing differently: a player may try to pressure an opponent with rapid strikes, bait an unsafe move for a throw, or rely on a favored sequence once an opening appears. The result remains immediately readable for newcomers but leaves room for players to study timing, recoveries, and the individual habits of every fighter.

The tournament framing gives the arcade game a clear progression. A chosen competitor works through a series of opponents before confronting tougher rivals connected to their personal storyline and the Mishima conflict. Kazuya's rule of the Zaibatsu has brought illegal activities, including animal experimentation, into the plot, tying Jun's mission to the larger tournament. Heihachi's return turns the final stretch into another violent contest between father and son, while the supernatural Devil element surrounding Kazuya adds an early fantasy thread to a series otherwise grounded in martial-arts archetypes and corporate intrigue.

Tekken 2 was an important early success for Namco's fighting-game series in arcades. Its 1995 arcade release was followed by a substantially expanded PlayStation conversion in 1996, but the arcade original remains the direct foundation: a focused competitive game built around matches, move knowledge, and the rhythm of the cabinet. The larger character roster and refinements helped establish ideas that later Tekken games would continue to develop, from family drama and unlockable combatants to a control system defined by the four limbs of each fighter.
