About
Shadow of the Beast for Atari Lynx is a 1992 single-player action-platform game published by Atari Corporation. Digital Developments created this handheld conversion of the 1989 Psygnosis and Reflections game, preserving the dark fantasy journey of Aarbron. Once a human child, Aarbron has been transformed into a warrior in the service of the Beast Lord Maletoth. The story begins when an execution awakens memories of his past, sending him across Maletoth's hostile domain in search of revenge and freedom.
Played from a side-on viewpoint, the game combines running, jumping, combat, exploration, and carefully placed obstacles. Aarbron travels through an interconnected fantasy world populated by hostile creatures, environmental dangers, and larger adversaries that block the route ahead. He begins with close-range attacks, so timing, positioning, and the choice of when to jump or engage an enemy matter from the outset. Falls, traps, enemy attacks, and direct encounters make progress demanding, while the journey rewards attention to the layout of each area.
Exploration is as important as fighting. The route through the world includes caves, fortifications, and other dangerous regions, with doors and barriers that cannot always be passed immediately. Aarbron can discover keys, weapons, and magical resources, and some encounters require the right item rather than simple persistence. This structure gives the adventure a puzzle element: reaching a location is not necessarily enough if a needed object was missed elsewhere. The objective remains to press forward through Maletoth's forces, survive the hazards, and uncover the means to complete Aarbron's quest.
The Atari Lynx version makes its own adjustments for the portable system. Its directional controls and two action buttons handle movement, jumping, attacks, and item use, while the handheld edition places collected objects in an inventory panel. Players select an item before activating it, so keys and other tools become deliberate choices instead of automatic pickups. The conversion also allows some adjustment after a vertical jump, which helps when negotiating enemies and projectiles on the Lynx screen. It is a one-player adventure with no ComLynx multiplayer mode.
Shadow of the Beast on Lynx belongs to a wider series that continued with Shadow of the Beast II and Shadow of the Beast III. Its source game was originally conceived as an ambitious Amiga showcase, famous for its scrolling scenery and distinctive presentation; the Lynx release translates that world to a cartridge-based handheld format rather than being a separate sequel or remake. The Lynx port has its own credited graphics and programming by Andrew Bond, with music and sound effects credited to Tim Swan. For players exploring Atari's portable library, it is a version of Aarbron's original adventure shaped around portable controls, item management, action, and exploration.
