About
Double Dragon for Atari Lynx is a 1993 handheld conversion of the landmark side-scrolling beat ’em up. Developed for the Lynx by Knight Technologies and published by Telegames, it adapts Technōs Japan’s 1987 arcade game for Atari’s color portable system. Players take the role of martial-arts brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee in a fight against the Black Warriors, the gang responsible for Marian’s abduction. The result is a compact version of one of the games that helped define the late-1980s brawling formula.
The story sends the Lee brothers through a violent, devastated city in pursuit of the gang. Their goal is to reach the Black Warriors’ stronghold, defeat the criminals blocking the way, and rescue Marian. The premise is deliberately direct, but it gives the journey a clear sense of forward motion: each hostile area is another step toward the gang’s leader and the final confrontation.
Combat takes place on horizontally scrolling streets and other urban backdrops rather than a single fixed arena. Players move on both the horizontal and vertical planes, lining up punches, kicks, jumps, and close-range martial-arts techniques against groups of opponents. Timing and positioning matter because enemies can approach from either side, and a poorly placed attack can leave a fighter exposed. Familiar foes from the original game, including the imposing Abobo/Bobo-type enforcer, help preserve the arcade game’s recognizable cast of adversaries.
Improvised weapons provide an important change of pace to bare-handed fighting. Enemies can be disarmed, letting the player turn items such as bats, whips, knives, crates, and boulders back on the gang. These pickups add reach or striking power, while the basic moves remain essential when an opponent closes in. The Lynx version retains the series’ emphasis on working through enemy waves, learning useful attacks, and adapting as tougher fighters enter the screen.
Double Dragon on Lynx is notable for bringing its large character art and recognizable scenery to a handheld screen. Its presentation aims to echo the arcade game’s look while reshaping the action for the Lynx’s smaller display and controls. Rather than being a new sequel or remake, it is a platform-specific interpretation of the first Double Dragon, released during the final years of the Lynx’s commercial life.
The game supports one player on a single Lynx and two players through Atari’s ComLynx connection. Cooperative play lets Billy and Jimmy tackle the gang together, a central part of the original arcade concept, while the game also provides a practice mode and selectable skill levels for players getting used to its attacks. Those options make the cartridge suitable both for a solo run through the Black Warriors’ territory and for linked handheld sessions.
As a member of the broader Double Dragon series, the Lynx release carries forward a game whose arcade success helped popularize the scrolling beat ’em up. Its value lies in offering the original rescue mission, street-fighting mechanics, weapons, and cooperative spirit in a distinct portable form. For Atari Lynx owners, Double Dragon remains a late-era licensed conversion that connects the system to one of arcade gaming’s most influential brawlers.
