About

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for Sega Game Gear is a 1993 falling-block puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Sega. It brings Compile's Puyo Puyo formula to Sega's handheld with a Sonic-themed presentation drawn from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Dr. Robotnik has imprisoned Beanville's bean-shaped residents and plans to feed them through his machine, so the player must outplay his henchmen in a succession of puzzle battles and stop the scheme.

Each playfield fills with linked pairs of coloured beans. Using the Game Gear controls, players shift and rotate each pair as it falls, aiming to connect four or more beans of one colour. A completed group disappears and lets everything above it drop; those falling pieces can make further matches, turning a simple clear into a chain reaction. The central challenge is therefore more than keeping the board open: it is arranging the lower rows so one removal sets off several prepared combinations.

Chains become an attack in the competitive rules. Stronger reactions send obstructive grey beans to the rival field, where they cannot simply be grouped by colour and must be cleared beside an ordinary match. A round is lost when a player can no longer place the next pair because beans have reached the top of the well. The compact Game Gear version supports one or two players, with head-to-head play available through a Gear-to-Gear cable, preserving the pressure of trying to build an attack while responding to an opponent's incoming obstruction.

Scenario Mode supplies the main single-player route, pitting the player against Robotnik's increasingly capable robotic underlings before the final confrontation. Exercise Mode offers a place to learn the basic matching and chaining rules without that sequence of opponents. The Game Gear and Master System editions also add Puzzle Mode, which presents set bean arrangements to clear, making this handheld version more than a straight reduction of the larger release.

Although it uses Sonic-series villain Dr. Robotnik and the Beanville premise, the Game Gear game is fundamentally a Western adaptation of Puyo Puyo rather than a platform adventure. Its cast and visual framing give the colour-matching contest a distinct Sega identity, while the underlying rules reward planning, recovery, and quick decisions. The 1993 Game Gear release later returned through the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and was included among the Game Gear titles in Sonic Origins Plus, keeping this portable version accessible as part of Sega's puzzle and Sonic history.
