About
Stargate is a 1994 Game Gear puzzle game developed by Probe Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It adapts Roland Emmerich's film through its Stargate imagery and the conflict with Ra, but it is a separate handheld design rather than a reduced version of the later Genesis and Super NES action game.
The story frames the puzzles as a struggle to close the gateways Ra controls before he can threaten Earth. Daniel is the central player character because he can read the alien markings; Ra and his Horus guard appear in the competitive framing and brief dialogue scenes. The premise echoes the film's expedition through an ancient device to a distant world ruled by Ra, while translating its Egyptian-inspired symbols into the game's main challenge.
Each round takes place inside a top-down, cylindrical Stargate well. Two-sided tiles marked with different hieroglyphs descend into one of the ring's segments. The player moves a tile clockwise or anticlockwise around the circular board, flips it to choose its visible symbol, and can hasten its fall, making placement and the orientation of every tile matter.
Three identical symbols stacked consecutively in a segment vanish. A seven-symbol gate address shown above the board provides the actual objective: clearing a matching trio marks off that address symbol, and completing the required address advances the player. Unhelpful tiles remain in the well, so the game is lost if the accumulating stacks reach its top.
Skill Mode is the solitary endurance option, asking the player to complete successive addresses as the tile pace rises. Battle Mode turns the same system into a contest against the computer or another player over the link cable. Its map of star-system sectors gives wins and losses a territorial context, and the computer opponent can interfere by adding tiles to the player's stacks.
The Game Gear release is therefore a deliberate puzzle adaptation, with no on-foot platform stages, weapons, jumping, or direct combat. Its color handheld presentation renders the symbols and small film-inspired scenes within the compact screen, while the circular well and address-building mechanic supply the game's sense of progression in place of the movie's desert exploration and firefights.
