About
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for Sega Game Gear is a 1994 action fighting game developed by SIMS and published by Sega. Based on the first season of the television series, it places the five original color-coded Rangers against the monsters dispatched by Rita Repulsa. Rather than sharing the design of the same-name games on Nintendo systems, this portable edition combines short side-scrolling encounters with one-on-one battles and giant-robot showdowns. It can be played alone, against the computer in a separate versus mode, or with another Game Gear owner through a Gear-to-Gear Link Cable.
Story mode follows the familiar escalation of the series. Before each mission, the player chooses the Red, Yellow, Blue, Pink, or Black Ranger. The selected hero first fights Putty Patrol enemies, confronts Goldar, and then faces the monster at the center of the episode-inspired encounter. Defeating that foe does not end the stage: the monster grows to colossal size, shifting the action to a battle in the Megazord. This two-part structure gives each chapter a Ranger-scale fight followed by a mechanical duel, reflecting the rhythm of the show without trying to recreate a specific television episode scene for scene.
Combat is built around the Game Gear's two action buttons. Punches and kicks form the basic offense, while pressing both buttons together performs stronger maneuvers such as throws or uppercuts. Each playable Ranger also has three character-specific special attacks, giving the color selection practical importance as well as visual variety. The early encounters are brief and direct, but the sequence of ordinary enemies, named adversaries, and bosses asks players to adjust to different opponents while preserving the accessible controls expected of a handheld game based on a children's television property.
The Green Ranger is central to the game's progression. He begins as an enemy encountered during the story, and beating him unlocks him for later use. His arrival also expands the giant-battle choices: a player using the Green Ranger can bring in the Dragonzord, including its fighting form, rather than relying only on the Megazord. The feature ties the game to the early television storyline in which the Green Ranger moves from Rita's control to the Rangers' side, while also rewarding completion with additional fighters and Zord options.
Outside the story campaign, the Game Gear version offers a single-player versus option and a dedicated Link mode for two players. Its selection extends beyond the Rangers to include giant machines, monsters, and the Putty Patrol in head-to-head matches. That breadth distinguishes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Game Gear from a simple linear brawler: the cartridge supports repeat play through character experiments and portable competitive matches, provided two systems, two copies of the game, and the linking hardware are available.
Released in North America in late 1994, the Game Gear game arrived during the first wave of Power Rangers popularity and alongside several very different adaptations bearing the same title. SIMS and Sega's version is therefore best understood as its own handheld interpretation, not a reduced copy of the Super NES or Genesis releases. Its blend of Ranger battles, Megazord encounters, Green Ranger unlocks, and link-cable competition captures several defining parts of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers premise within the Game Gear's compact format.
