About
Mortal Kombat 3 (rev 2.1) is Midway's 1995 arcade fighting game, in which Earthrealm's defenders face Shao Kahn after his invasion begins merging Outworld with Earth. Players select a fighter and battle through a ladder of opponents, ultimately confronting Motaro and Shao Kahn.
The arcade roster includes returning fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax, Sonya Blade, Kano, Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero and Kabal, alongside Sindel, Sheeva, Stryker, Nightwolf, and the cyborgs Cyrax and Sektor. Smoke is a hidden playable character accessed through the game's code system.
Matches retain Mortal Kombat's five-button attacks and block control while adding a Run button with a limited meter. Running can close distance, and the meter is also spent by the game's preset chain combinations. Successful sequences can launch an opponent into further juggling attacks.
Single-player mode uses a Choose Your Destiny screen to set the difficulty. Two-player versus matches support Kombat Kodes, entered after character selection, which can alter match rules or arrange special encounters.
Several arenas are connected as two-level battlegrounds: an uppercut can send a fighter from the Subway to the Street, from the Bank to the Rooftop, or from the Soul Chamber to the Balcony. The game also includes stage-specific finishers, such as the Subway and Bell Tower fatalities.
Fatalities return alongside Babalities, Friendships, and Animalities. Revision 2.1 adjusts computer behavior, lowers damage for certain Sub-Zero and Kabal combos, fixes several bugs, and preserves Smoke's unlocked state after an Ultimate Kombat Kode is entered. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was later released as a separate arcade update with additional characters, altered gameplay, and new arenas.
