About
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing for Game Boy Color brings Midway's cartoonish boxing series to Nintendo's handheld in a separate version developed by Crawfish Interactive. Released in late 1999, this sports game adapts the personalities and knockout-focused premise of the console title for the Game Boy Color with a side-on, slightly angled view of the ring and compact two-dimensional presentation. It is an arcade-style take on boxing: fighters are deliberately larger-than-life, bouts move quickly, and the objective is to outlast or knock down the opponent over best-of-three contests.
The game begins with seven selectable fighters drawn from the series' colorful cast, while further boxers become available through progress. Each competitor has their own balance of attributes, encouraging players to consider speed, power, and reach when deciding who to take into the ring. This keeps the game centered on reading an opponent and choosing opportunities to attack rather than on a simulation of licensed professional boxing.
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing uses the Game Boy Color controls to provide high and low strikes. The A and B buttons deliver the two basic punches, while combining a punch button with up produces an uppercut and combining it with down aims a shot at the body. Defensive positioning matters as well: backing away allows a fighter to block incoming blows. Health and stamina displays track the damage and endurance of both boxers throughout a bout, giving exchanges a clear risk-and-reward rhythm.
A defining mechanic is the R-U-M-B-L-E meter. Clean, forceful hits add letters to the meter; completing the word gives the fighter access to a powerful Rumble Flurry by pressing A and B together. The move can turn the momentum of a match, but it must first be earned through successful offense, and a knockdown clears the accumulated letters. That system gives each round an extra objective beyond simply trading punches and makes recovery after a setback especially important.
The Game Boy Color edition offers two principal ways to play. Arcade provides an individual match, while Championship sends a chosen boxer through a ladder against the rest of the roster. The more limited mode selection and 2D action distinguish it from the contemporary home-console releases, which were made by other teams and use 3D rings. Crawfish's version is therefore best understood as a handheld reinterpretation of Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, not a direct technical conversion of the Dreamcast, PlayStation, or Nintendo 64 game.
It also has a notable piece of Game Boy Color hardware history. North American cartridges include built-in rumble, allowing the cartridge to vibrate during the action; the feature was not present in every regional release. The game retains the series' show-business flavor with recorded introductions from ring announcer Michael Buffer, including the familiar catchphrase that inspired its title. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing was followed by Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2, but this 1999 Game Boy Color entry remains the original portable version of Midway's comic-book-styled boxing franchise.
