About
Missile Command for Game Boy Color is a 1999 fixed-screen action game published by Hasbro Interactive. Built from Atari's landmark 1980 arcade defense game and ported for this handheld release by The Code Monkeys, it brings the series' tense, score-driven survival format to Nintendo's color portable. Rather than attacking an opponent, the player guards a row of cities against descending alien missiles, turning a familiar arcade premise into a compact Game Boy Color challenge.
Each round asks the player to move a targeting sight around the sky and send defensive missiles toward the most urgent threats. A shot detonates at its destination, creating an expanding blast that can destroy incoming weapons caught inside it. Timing and placement matter because a well-positioned explosion can clear several dangers, while a missed shot wastes part of a limited missile supply. The directional controls stand in for the arcade cabinet's trackball, so the pace comes from quickly choosing where to place each protective burst.
The cities below are the objective as well as the scorekeeper: every enemy missile that reaches its target brings the defense closer to collapse. Waves grow more demanding as attacks become faster and more crowded, requiring players to balance coverage across the screen instead of concentrating on a single approach. Finishing a wave with cities and ammunition intact earns bonus points, making accuracy valuable even when the immediate crisis seems under control. The game ends when the defended settlement has been lost, keeping the focus on lasting through one more assault and improving a high score.
This Game Boy Color edition is related to the earlier Game Boy version of Missile Command, which was also handled by The Code Monkeys, but adds color presentation for the newer handheld. It is not the separate 1999 Windows and PlayStation remake, which reworked the property in a different style. The GBC game instead preserves the overhead, single-screen defense structure associated with the arcade original while adapting it for a small display and portable controls. A turn-taking two-player mode lets two players compare their ability to protect the cities from the same escalating pressure.
Missile Command on Game Boy Color belongs to a long line of home versions of Atari's arcade classic, whose Cold War-era imagery and defensive gameplay made it a defining game of its period. This release offers a late-1990s handheld route to that formula: scan the sky, conserve ammunition, place explosions carefully, and keep the cities alive for as long as possible. Its simple rules leave room for increasingly demanding decision-making, which is why the basic design remained recognizable across arcade cabinets, early home consoles, Game Boy hardware, and this colorized portable edition.
