About
TUNIC GBC is an unofficial 2023 Game Boy Color-style action-adventure demake created by MintFerret and released through itch.io. Built with GB Studio, it condenses the atmosphere and exploratory premise of the 2022 game TUNIC into a short, pixel-art adventure designed around Game Boy Color hardware. It is a fan project rather than an official Finji or Isometricorp release, and its compact scope focuses on a small selection of areas, enemies, ruins, and secrets.
Players guide a tiny fox through a top-down world inspired by early Zelda adventures. Movement uses the directional pad, while the face buttons handle sword attacks and the use of equipped items. Encounters favor direct, close-range action: the fox explores connected locations, faces monsters, and searches for a route onward through the miniature world. The deliberately brief format makes progress about learning the layout, checking for concealed details, and putting together the tools needed to continue.
Exploration is central to TUNIC GBC's adaptation. Ancient-looking ruins and hostile creatures give its areas a sense of mystery, while collectible manual pages offer hints without spelling everything out. The manual can be opened from the controls, alongside an inventory that separates weapons from other items. This structure preserves an important idea from its inspiration—discovering information through play—while recasting it for a low-resolution handheld presentation.
MintFerret's finished release was based largely on an early demo of the original TUNIC, with changes made for the limitations of GB Studio and Game Boy-oriented design. Combat was adjusted toward an old-school Zelda-like feel, the manuals were simplified to fit the screen, and the in-game script was reduced for an 8-by-8-pixel font. The demake does not include shields, and its inventory organization differs from the original. Its art takes cues from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening while remaining intentionally simple, and its music and effects were arranged or produced for the project within the available audio constraints.
The initial 1.0 release arrived in January 2023 after several months of development; a 1.1 update followed later that month, fixing a checkpoint-related invincibility bug and making the TUNIC GBC name more specific. The project is available in browser form as well as Game Boy Color and Analogue Pocket downloads, with keyboard and gamepad controls supported by the browser version. A later update added RetroAchievements support and made the source code available, giving this small homebrew demake a place among modern projects built for retro-style handheld play.
