About

Rampage: World Tour on Game Boy Color brings Midway's monster-movie arcade sequel to the handheld in a version developed by Digital Eclipse. Released in North America in December 1998, it adapts the 1997 arcade game that followed the original Rampage. The premise again turns ordinary people into enormous creatures after an accident connected to the corrupt Scumlabs organization: George becomes a giant ape, Lizzie a colossal reptile, and Ralph a huge wolf. Their answer to the disaster is not restraint but a globe-spanning campaign of demolition aimed at Scumlabs installations.

The game is a side-scrolling action experience built around a simple destructive objective. A player chooses George, Lizzie, or Ralph and enters a city filled with climbable buildings, civilians, hazards, and military opposition. Monsters scale walls, smash windows, punch and kick structures, and tear at occupants as they work toward leveling every building on the stage. Health is always under pressure from armed forces and environmental danger, while food and other pickups can restore a creature or offer useful effects. The direct controls and immediately readable goal preserve the pick-up-and-play character that defined the series in arcades.

World Tour expands the basic Rampage formula with a larger route of cities and a travel system that can send the monsters away from the United States. Early on, the player can influence the journey by destroying a tourism billboard while it displays a region or by taking World Tour power-ups. Those choices lead to runs of overseas locations before the action returns to Scumlabs targets. The campaign does not conclude merely because a fixed number of ordinary cities have fallen; the monsters must ultimately eliminate the corporation's bases, so the order of travel and the power-ups collected can affect the route taken through the game.

Combat and destruction happen simultaneously. Tanks, helicopters, jets, armed soldiers, and other attackers try to wear down the monster, but the creature can fight back by striking foes or swatting aircraft from the sky. If too much time passes, jets can bomb the remaining buildings, ending the stage but reducing the opportunity to score. Purple radioactive waste can briefly transform a monster into V.E.R.N., a more powerful altered form. These additions give the repeated building-smashing loop changing moments of risk and reward without abandoning the deliberately uncomplicated arcade structure.

The Game Boy Color edition translates that oversized city-wrecking spectacle to a portable format while retaining the core cast, Scumlabs story, worldwide setting, and recognizable 2D action. It is a distinct handheld conversion rather than the arcade hardware in miniature, so its presentation and technical limits differ from the larger console versions. Digital Eclipse handled this version, while Game Refuge created the original arcade release. That distinction matters for players looking for the Game Boy Color port specifically: it is part of the same Rampage World Tour campaign, tailored to the system's compact screen and portable play.

Rampage: World Tour suits players drawn to classic arcade action, giant-monster fiction, and games whose appeal lies in immediate destruction rather than elaborate systems. Its three leads offer the same essential mission through different monster personalities, and the appeal comes from pushing through another city, finding a helpful item, surviving the response from the military, and watching the skyline disappear. As a sequel, it carries forward the playful premise of Rampage while adding a broader itinerary, more targets, special transformations, and a final confrontation with Scumlabs. The Game Boy Color release preserves that mischievous, cartoonish power fantasy in a form made for short sessions or a longer effort to clear every corporate base.
