About
Rockman X4 for Game Boy Color is an unlicensed action-platform game from around 2000, generally attributed to Makon Soft and associated with publisher Ka Sheng. Despite its title, it is not a Game Boy Color conversion of Capcom’s 1997 Mega Man X4, nor does it follow that game’s X-series story or feature its two playable heroes. Instead, this cartridge is a color-oriented revision of Makon Soft’s earlier Rockman 8 bootleg, using the familiar Rockman/Mega Man-style run, jump, and shooting format on Nintendo’s handheld.
The adventure is built around side-scrolling stages in which the blue-armored hero advances through hazards and enemy-filled rooms toward a boss encounter. Players direct the character with the Game Boy Color controls, jumping across gaps and obstacles while firing the standard arm cannon at foes. Its structure echoes the selectable-stage approach associated with the classic series: the game presents five routes, tied to Frost Man, Clown Man, Tengu Man, Grenade Man, and a route labelled Rock Man. Completing a stage means surviving its platforming challenges and defeating its final opponent.
Rockman X4 draws much of its visual material and overall design from the prior Rockman 8 release rather than adapting the console Mega Man X4 wholesale. The earlier game already borrowed imagery and ideas from Capcom’s Mega Man games, and this version changes the presentation to lean on the X4 name. Its opening includes still-image material associated with the real Mega Man X4, while the title and stage-select screens were reworked for this release. Those touches can make the cartridge look like an X-series game at a glance, but the playable content remains rooted in the separate Rockman 8-derived design.
Color is the most immediate Game Boy Color-specific difference. Backgrounds, characters, and interface elements receive a basic palette treatment absent from the monochrome predecessor, creating a distinct version rather than an entirely new game. The boss-selection presentation was also altered: instead of the earlier game’s mismatched boss display, this edition uses character portraits when a route is chosen. Reports on surviving copies also note that the order of the Rock Man and Clown Man positions was changed. Such small alterations are central to what separates Rockman X4 from the original Makon Soft release.
The game’s unusual identity is part of its historical interest. It circulated as an unauthorized product and uses names that can cause it to be confused with Capcom’s official Mega Man X4, a very different game released for PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It has also appeared under the alternate name Megaman X4, while cartridge and header references to Rockman 99 add another layer of confusion for collectors and cataloguers. Rockman X4 is best understood as a single-player Game Boy Color platform shooter and a colorized variation on Rockman 8, not as an official entry in either Capcom’s Mega Man X line or its Game Boy Color catalog.
Progression is correspondingly compact: choose a route, clear the stage’s enemies and platforming sections, overcome its boss, then return to the selection structure for the remaining routes. Documentation of the game indicates that clearing all available bosses does not lead into a conventional ending sequence; it cycles back to the boss-select screen instead. That incomplete loop, the recycled material, and the conspicuous title change distinguish this release from the carefully produced licensed Mega Man titles of its era. For anyone identifying a cartridge or database entry, the Game Boy Color platform, circa-2000 date, Makon Soft attribution, and Rockman 8 connection are the key details.
