About
Microsoft: The Best of Entertainment Pack for Game Boy Color is a 2001 single-player collection developed by Saffire. It adapts seven compact games associated with Microsoft’s earlier Entertainment Pack series for Nintendo’s color handheld, turning a selection of card, puzzle, strategy, and arcade-style diversions into one cartridge. Classified Games handled the North American release, while Cryo Interactive published the European edition. Rather than presenting a new story or a shared campaign, the package is built around a menu of self-contained games designed for short sessions.
The card-game side of the collection includes FreeCell, Tut’s Tomb, and TriPeaks. FreeCell challenges the player to reorganize a dealt layout into completed suit piles while using its limited temporary cells to make room for key moves. Tut’s Tomb is another solitaire-style puzzle, while TriPeaks asks the player to clear exposed cards by selecting cards one rank above or below the current card. Together, these games make planning, sequencing, and dealing with an inconvenient draw central to the experience.
Minesweeper brings its familiar hidden-mine board to the Game Boy Color, where the goal is to uncover safe squares while using number clues to identify dangerous ones. Life Genesis offers a different kind of puzzle: it is based on Conway’s Game of Life, in which patterns evolve across a grid under simple rules. TicTactics rounds out the more abstract games with a tic-tac-toe variant. These entries give the cartridge a mix of logic challenges that can be restarted quickly and approached without a long tutorial.
SkiFree supplies the collection’s most action-oriented change of pace. Instead of arranging cards or reading a grid, the player guides a skier downhill and tries to keep the run going while reacting to what lies ahead. Its inclusion reflects the broad range of the original Entertainment Pack line, whose games were made for accessible, break-length play rather than a single genre. On Game Boy Color, that variety lets players move from a card layout to a board puzzle or a downhill run without changing cartridges.
Microsoft: The Best of Entertainment Pack Game Boy Color is related to, but not the same thing as, the 1994 Windows compilation The Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack. The handheld release condenses material associated with the Windows Entertainment Packs into seven selections and was specifically produced by Saffire for the Game Boy Color. It should also not be confused with the separate Game Boy Color release Microsoft: The 6-in-1 Puzzle Collection Entertainment Pack, which is a different compilation.
As a late Game Boy Color compilation, Microsoft: The Best of Entertainment Pack preserves a portable snapshot of games better known from the Windows era. Its individual activities have clear goals—finish a card layout, reveal a safe board, shape a living pattern, win a grid contest, or survive a ski run—so it works equally as a collection of familiar formats and as an introduction to several enduring computer-game staples. The emphasis stays on replayable rules and repeated attempts, with each game standing on its own rather than requiring progress through the others.
