About

Lode Runner: The Dig Fight (ver. B) is Psikyo's 2000 coin-operated arcade entry in the long-running Lode Runner puzzle-platform series. Released in Japan, it is a separate arcade game rather than the PlayStation compilation or any home-console Lode Runner release. Psikyo both developed and published this late-series installment, bringing the familiar treasure-hunting format to a brightly illustrated arcade presentation with a small amount of story material shown between play sequences.

Each stage is a compact maze of platforms, ladders, hanging bars, breakable floor tiles and gold. The runner’s goal is to take every gold piece while avoiding the pursuing enemies. Movement is direct and deliberately simple: the player runs across ledges, climbs, descends and uses the digging actions to remove a brick to either side. A hole lasts only briefly, but it can catch an enemy, create a route, or become a trap for the player who fails to escape before the floor repairs itself.

That temporary terrain change is the heart of the game’s problem solving. Gold placement, guard positions and the shape of each screen make route planning important, since grabbing an easy treasure first may leave another inaccessible or put an enemy directly in the runner’s path. Enemies can carry gold, adding another tactical consideration when deciding whether to lure them into a pit, wait for them to drop it, or take a different route. The result preserves the series’ combination of fast movement and careful spatial judgment rather than turning the arcade entry into a conventional action platformer.

The Dig Fight adds new levels to the Lode Runner formula and includes a two-player versus mode. In that mode, each player controls a runner on a separate split-screen playfield, making the cabinet’s two-screen presentation part of the competitive design. Arcade documentation lists an eight-way joystick and three buttons, and the game supports concurrent two-player play. Its story cut-scenes and redesigned graphics distinguish it visually from the older computer and arcade games while keeping the essential collect, dig and evade loop intact.

The “ver. B” in this listing identifies the later factory-updated version of Lode Runner: The Dig Fight. The original version is reported to be comparatively uncommon because many boards were updated to Version B at the factory. This makes Lode Runner: The Dig Fight (ver. B) the version most closely associated with the title’s arcade run: a Japan-only Psikyo production that connects the classic 1983 Lode Runner idea with the style and competitive options of a 2000 arcade release.
