About
Ultimate Spider-Man for Game Boy Advance is a 2005 2D action-platform game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. Rather than reproducing the free-roaming console game, this portable adaptation turns the Ultimate Marvel storyline into a focused side-scrolling adventure. It follows Peter Parker and his former friend Eddie Brock after the events of the Ultimate Spider-Man "Venom" comic arc, bringing Spider-Man’s web-slinging and Venom’s brute force to the Game Boy Advance in distinctly different playable roles.
The campaign is arranged as seven comic-book-style issues, with each issue divided into three chapters. Players move through linear stages in search of exits and mission objectives, using a directional indicator to locate the next target. Objectives vary by chapter: Spider-Man may need to reach an objective, save civilians, or deal with hazards such as bombs, while some sections put the emphasis squarely on a boss encounter. This structure gives the GBA version a mission-based pace instead of the city exploration found in the home-console release.
Spider-Man is built around agility. He can run, jump, climb, attack enemies, and use web abilities to cross gaps or strike from a safer distance. His web fluid is a limited resource represented by a blue gauge, so web-slinging and web attacks must be used with care. Blue pickups replenish the supply, and rescuing civilians can also provide a reward. In this version, a web swing sends Spider-Man a set distance forward rather than requiring a nearby building, an adjustment tailored to the compact, horizontal stages.
Venom offers a much heavier approach to the same adventure. His attacks use the symbiote’s strength and tendrils, but his health gradually drains, making each encounter a race to stay fed. After an enemy has been weakened far enough, Venom can consume it to restore himself. The contrast between Spider-Man’s limited web meter and Venom’s constantly declining health changes the rhythm of their chapters, asking players to manage a different resource and fight in a more direct style whenever control shifts to Eddie Brock.
Ultimate Spider-Man on GBA keeps the conflict centered on the returning Venom and includes Shocker, Silver Sable, and Carnage among its principal antagonists. Hidden power-ups in the chapters can expand Spider-Man’s web capacity, improve Venom’s health and feeding efficiency, or unlock additional moves and abilities for both characters. The result is a handheld-specific interpretation of the 2005 game: a single-player comic-inspired platform adventure that shares its Ultimate universe premise with the better-known console versions while using its own stages, mechanics, and progression.
