About

Gradius is Konami's 1985 arcade horizontal shooter, presented here as the Japanese ROM version of the original coin-operated release. The player pilots the Vic Viper through hostile space in the opening chapter of the Gradius series, steering through a succession of alien worlds while firing on formations, defenses, and massive stage guardians. Known as Nemesis in many overseas arcade releases, this Japanese edition keeps the Gradius name associated with the game's home market.

The fundamental challenge is survival through a side-scrolling course while managing the Vic Viper's limited starting firepower. A directional control guides the ship around terrain and projectiles, while separate attack and power-up controls make quick reactions matter. Enemies and stage obstacles fill the screen from several directions, so safe positioning is as important as shooting. Losing the ship removes its accumulated advantages, turning recovery into a major part of a run.

Gradius is built around its distinctive power meter. Orange capsules collected from certain enemies advance a selection bar along the bottom of the screen; rather than immediately imposing an upgrade, the player chooses when to activate the currently selected ability. The available steps include speed increases, missiles, a double shot, laser fire, defensive shields, and Options. This system creates a continuing trade-off: spend capsules early for a practical improvement, or hold them long enough to reach a stronger selection.

Options are small satellite units that follow the Vic Viper and repeat its shots, making their positioning integral to attack coverage. They can help reach enemies above, below, or behind the ship, while the chosen weapon changes how those extra shots behave. Speed upgrades make evasion easier but demand more precise steering, and a shield can absorb danger that would otherwise end a life. The result is a shooter in which route knowledge and a carefully chosen loadout are closely connected.

The arcade journey moves through seven visually distinct environments, from open space and volcanic terrain to the famous Moai-head area. Each section introduces its own hazards, enemy patterns, and scenery, culminating in oversized bosses or installations with vulnerable targets. Many mechanical bosses feature glowing cores reached by firing through guarded passages, a confrontation that established the series' familiar call to destroy the core. Organic threats use different weak points, keeping the end-of-stage encounters from following one pattern alone.

Gradius arrived during a formative period for arcade shoot-'em-ups and carried forward ideas from Konami's earlier Scramble while giving players unusual control over their upgrades. Its combination of memorization-heavy stage design, selectable power development, and the Vic Viper's trailing Options became the foundation for later Gradius games and influenced the language of side-scrolling shooters. The Japanese arcade version remains the original expression of those mechanics: a demanding space mission where building power is only useful if the pilot can keep it.
