About

BurgerTime is a 1982 Data East arcade game, listed here as the Data East set 1 version, that turns a restaurant kitchen into a single-screen platform challenge. Released in Japan as Hamburger for Data East's DECO Cassette System and known internationally as BurgerTime, it places players in the apron of chef Peter Pepper. The Western arcade release was associated with Bally Midway in North America, while this entry represents the underlying Data East arcade game rather than one of its many later home conversions.

Each board is a compact network of ledges and ladders, with giant buns, patties, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and other burger components arranged above waiting plates. Peter moves with a four-way joystick and must cross the full width of an ingredient to make it drop to the level below. The immediate goal is to guide every required piece down its vertical route and assemble the complete burgers on the plates at the bottom. Clearing every burger advances the game to the next kitchen layout.

The falling-food system gives BurgerTime its distinctive rhythm. Ingredients can descend one level at a time, but a well-timed drop can also send them farther down when enemies are riding along. That rewards planning routes through the maze instead of merely racing from ladder to ladder. Players weigh the safest path to an unfinished ingredient against the chance to use a falling layer to open space, score points, and speed up the board.

Peter is pursued by the game's food-themed antagonists: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. Contact with an active pursuer costs a life, so positioning is as important as movement. Peter begins with a limited supply of pepper, fired in the direction he faces to stun an enemy long enough to slip past. Ice cream, coffee, and fries appear as bonus foods; collecting them adds points and replenishes pepper, making them valuable opportunities during a crowded board.

BurgerTime supports one or two players, with the classic arcade action built around short, increasingly demanding stages rather than a continuous story. Later layouts introduce more difficult arrangements of ingredients, enemies, and escape routes, while completed boards eventually cycle after the initial set. The bright food characters and deceptively direct objective make every screen easy to read, yet the danger of being trapped near an ingredient creates the tactical pressure that defines the game.

The arcade original became one of Data East's best-known early games and led to ports on numerous home systems, each with its own presentation and control compromises. It also established a small series that includes the arcade spin-off Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory and the later Super BurgerTime. For players seeking the original BurgerTime arcade experience, the Data East set preserves the ladder-and-platform recipe: build the burgers, save the pepper, and keep Peter Pepper a step ahead of the pursuing food.
