About
BurgerTime NES is Data East's 1987 North American home version of the food-themed arcade action game, developed with SAS Sakata. It puts players in the shoes of chef Peter Pepper, whose kitchen has become a tall maze of platforms, ladders and oversized sandwich ingredients. The goal is simple to state but demanding to execute: turn every scattered component into finished hamburgers on the plates at the bottom of the screen while staying clear of the animated foods trying to stop the chef.
Each board is built around buns, patties, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes arranged across several ledges. Peter makes an ingredient section drop by walking its full width, so route planning matters as much as quick movement. Falling pieces can cascade through lower levels, shifting other ingredients and bringing a burger closer to completion. A stage ends only when all of its required burgers have been assembled, making it important to decide when to finish a safe section and when to take a riskier path through the maze.
Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Egg and Mr. Pickle patrol the same ladders and platforms, turning every trip between ingredients into a chase. Peter has a limited stock of pepper that can temporarily stun an enemy directly ahead, creating a narrow opening to escape or pass through. More aggressive tactics are also available: an enemy can be caught beneath a falling ingredient or carried on one as it drops. These plays can clear space and improve scoring, but they demand careful timing because a single touch from an active Food Foe costs a life.
BurgerTime grows tougher across six screens, with changing layouts, additional pressure from enemies and routes that can leave Peter trapped if he commits too early. Bonus foods such as ice cream, coffee and fries can appear during play, adding points and restoring a pepper charge. The NES release supports one or two players, with players taking turns rather than sharing the kitchen at once. Its clear, single-screen structure makes the next objective easy to read, while the order in which the ingredients are dropped keeps the action from becoming routine.
The game originated as Data East's 1982 arcade release, which was called Hamburger in Japan before BurgerTime became the name used abroad. This cartridge version arrived first in Japan through Namco for the Famicom in 1985, then reached the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in May 1987 under Data East. The NES adaptation preserves the central platforms-and-ladders formula that defined the arcade original: a comic restaurant premise, a recognizable cast of Food Foes and a deceptively strategic race to build complete burgers.
As an early NES arcade conversion, BurgerTime stands apart from conventional side-scrolling platform games. There is no destination to reach beyond the kitchen; success comes from managing a compact playfield, conserving pepper, exploiting falling ingredients and choosing a route before the enemies close in. Its unusual mix of pursuit, puzzle-like board control and score-chasing gave Peter Pepper a lasting place in Data East's catalog, later leading to related games and new versions of the burger-building idea.
