About

R-Type DX for Game Boy Color is a 1999 single-player side-scrolling shooter compilation developed by Bits Studios and published by Nintendo. It brings the first two R-Type games to Nintendo's colour handheld in a package built around the series' science-fiction battle against the Bydo Empire. Rather than being a direct port of one arcade release, this cartridge gathers several ways to play the first two entries, including their original monochrome Game Boy forms, colour-enhanced versions, and a dedicated DX arrangement that links the two games into one extended campaign.

The basic mission is immediately recognisable R-Type: guide the R-9 fighter through hostile alien territory, avoid dense enemy formations and scenery, and survive to confront the boss at the end of a stage. Movement is handled with the Game Boy Color control pad, while the ship fires forward and can charge its beam cannon for a stronger shot. The deliberate pace makes safe positioning and learning attack patterns as important as quick reactions, especially when the screen fills with incoming fire or enemies approach from the rear.

Power-ups deepen that simple shoot-and-dodge loop. The R-9 can collect equipment that changes its firepower, with options including the Fire Chain, Super Laser, and Bubble Beam. Its signature floating support unit follows the ship, shoots independently, and can be fixed to either the nose or tail of the fighter. That choice turns the pod into both a weapon and a defensive tool: attaching it forward helps clear a path, while mounting it behind the craft gives extra cover against threats arriving from the opposite direction.

R-Type DX stands apart from a straightforward Game Boy Color conversion because of its five-game presentation. Players can choose the black-and-white Game Boy versions of R-Type and R-Type II, revisit both in colour-enhanced editions, or take on the combined DX game. The latter joins the earlier material into a continuous outer-space assault, giving the collection a longer progression through the Bydo campaign. Rapid-fire options also complement the handheld controls, while every version remains a one-player challenge focused on navigating stages and defeating their large end-of-level enemies.

The release arrived more than a decade after the original R-Type arcade game and after R-Type II, so it serves as a compact Game Boy Color entry point to the early series rather than a new numbered sequel. Its mixture of legacy monochrome modes, colour updates, and the connected DX route reflects the Game Boy Color era's ability to support older Game Boy software while offering colour-specific enhancements. For players exploring the R-Type series on Nintendo hardware, R-Type DX preserves its defining elements: the R-9, the adaptable support pod, charged attacks, methodical stage play, and the persistent Bydo threat.
