About
Crystalis for Game Boy Color is a single-player action role-playing game released by Nintendo in North America on June 26, 2000. Converted by Nintendo Software Technology from SNK's 1990 NES adventure, this portable version returns to a distant, postwar world where magic has replaced the technology that helped destroy civilization. A young magician wakes from a century of frozen sleep with no memory of his past and finds a land threatened by the forces of Draygon. His task is to recover four elemental swords and use their combined power to stop the conquest before it reaches the world-shaping Tower.
Played from an overhead view, Crystalis mixes real-time sword fighting with exploration, towns, shops, equipment, and character growth. The hero travels in eight directions through connected outdoor areas and dangerous interiors, striking creatures with an equipped sword while keeping a selected item or magic power ready for use. Defeated enemies yield experience and money: experience raises the hero's level and combat statistics, while currency pays for useful supplies. Armor and shields add another layer of preparation, making gear, inventory management, and visits to merchants part of the journey between major encounters.
The central progression revolves around the Sword of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder. Each sword can be used for regular close-range attacks or charged to unleash its own special power. Those abilities are more than simple attacks: the elemental weapons open routes through the world, such as creating a passage across suitable water with the water sword. The sages Zebu, Tornel, Asina, and Kensu guide the amnesiac hero along the way, while spells including telepathy help him seek advice as the quest moves through villages, caves, forests, and enemy-held territory. Boss encounters, monsters, environmental barriers, and the hunt for the next sword give the adventure its forward momentum.
Although it shares its title, setting, and basic adventure structure with the NES original, the Game Boy Color Crystalis is a distinct conversion rather than a straight cartridge-sized copy. Nintendo Software Technology reworked the presentation for the handheld, including a substantially different soundtrack and revised text and story scenes. Its ending sequence and the order of the final confrontations also differ from the NES game. The reduced Game Boy Color display shows a smaller portion of the surrounding area than the console version, changing how players read combat and explore. It also adds voiced announcements when the elemental swords are found and removes the original version's rule that some enemies are immune to particular sword elements.
That combination of fantasy, ruined-world science fiction, and equipment-driven action gives Crystalis Game Boy Color a clear identity within the handheld's role-playing library. It preserves the long-form quest of the earlier SNK game while adapting it to Nintendo's color portable hardware, placing immediate swordplay alongside leveling, exploration, and puzzle-like use of elemental powers. For players following the hero's lost history, the search for Crystalis steadily connects personal survival with the larger struggle over a world trying to avoid repeating its catastrophic past.
