About
Conker's Pocket Tales for Game Boy Color is a 1999 single-player action-adventure from Rare. Released in North America on June 8, 1999, it casts Rare's red squirrel hero in a colorful, top-down quest that blends exploration, puzzles, light combat, and collectible hunting. Berri has arranged a birthday party for Conker, but the villainous Evil Acorn wrecks the celebration, steals the presents, and carries Berri away. Conker sets out to recover what was taken and reach a final confrontation with the Acorn.
The adventure is viewed from above as Conker travels through six worlds made up of connected outdoor areas, hazards, enemy-filled paths, and puzzle rooms. Progress depends on searching each region for the presents scattered by the Evil Acorn and meeting the requirements that open the way onward. That structure makes observation as important as action: a blocked route may point toward a switch, a movable object, a buried passage, or another clue elsewhere in the area. Boss encounters give the journey clear milestones while the search for missing presents encourages revisiting spaces with newly understood solutions.
Conker's basic moves support that puzzle-led design. He can run and jump over obstacles, and a mid-air ground-pound can activate floor buttons. His slingshot provides a ranged option against the Acorn's minions and can also trigger distant switches, so it has a role beyond combat. Soft patches of ground conceal routes between linked digging spots, while blocks can be pushed into floor grooves to alter an area. These simple, readable actions let the game build obstacles from a small set of tools rather than constantly changing the controls.
The birthday-rescue story keeps the tone playful and family-friendly, an especially notable contrast with the direction later Conker games would take. Along the main route, Pocket Tales also breaks up its exploration with sporting-style mini-games. They fit the game's variety of activities without turning the cartridge into a collection of separate events: the central task remains pursuing the Evil Acorn through the worlds, gathering the stolen presents, and rescuing Berri. Enemies including plant-like creatures and snakes make the slingshot useful during the trip.
Although it was built as a Game Boy Color release, Conker's Pocket Tales is a dual-format cartridge that also works on the original Game Boy and Super Game Boy. The experience is not simply color versus monochrome: the Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions have different layouts and some different events. Saving also differs by hardware. On a Game Boy Color or later compatible model, the game can be saved from the pause menu, while play on a non-color Game Boy relies on designated save points. That compatibility makes the game part of the transitional period when Game Boy Color titles could still serve players with earlier handhelds.
Pocket Tales is Conker's first title and presents the character in an early, all-ages adventure role. Rare handled both development and publishing, with Nintendo involved in physical distribution in the period. For Game Boy Color players looking for a compact adventure built around connected areas, item collection, switches, digging routes, slingshot targets, and mini-games, Conker's Pocket Tales offers a distinct starting point for the series before its later, very different identity on home consoles.
