About

Captain Tsubasa J: Zenkoku Seiha e no Chousen is a Japanese Game Boy football game released by Bandai on September 14, 1995. Development is credited to BEC, with Layup and Technosight also named in Japanese game-reference material. It was made for one or two players, and it also supports the Super Game Boy.

The game is tied specifically to the 1994–95 Captain Tsubasa J television adaptation rather than being another Tecmo entry in the earlier game line. Its story condenses the elementary-school arc: Tsubasa Ozora transfers to Nankatsu, meets teammates and rivals including Genzo Wakabayashi and Kojiro Hyuga, and helps Nankatsu SC pursue the national championship.

Story mode begins with Nankatsu versus Shutetsu and follows the team through the national tournament. Shimizu, Hanawa, Musashi, and Hyuga-led Meiwa are among the opponents, with Meiwa encountered twice: once in the opening round and again in the final. Finishing a match produces a short password, allowing progress to be resumed without a battery-backed save.

Unlike the command-driven, cinematic football approach associated with the Tecmo Captain Tsubasa games, this installment plays from a top-down field in real time. On offense, B passes and A shoots; passes can be directed to one of two displayed teammates. On defense, A performs a tackle while B calls the captain to the ball at a stamina cost.

Shooting switches to a face-off gauge between the attacker and a defender or goalkeeper. Stopping the gauge farther toward its edge makes the attempt more powerful, and repeated A presses can nudge the result after the stop. The directional pad selects ordinary shots, loop shots, and character techniques where available; crosses can lead to headers or volleys, while goalkeepers choose catches, punches, or their own special saves.

Every player has stamina but no experience or leveling system. Fatigue narrows the effective shooting range and slows dribbling, so managing attacks and wearing down the opposition matters across a match. A team trailing by two or more goals late on receives a small morale-based stamina recovery, echoing the comeback drama of the source material.

Outside the narrative, a free-match mode lets players choose Nankatsu, Shimizu, Hanawa, Furano, Musashi, or Meiwa; the same six clubs can be used in a tournament. A penalty-kick mode uses five shooters before sudden death, and a practice mode stages Tsubasa shots against Wakabayashi with full stamina. Match length and three CPU difficulty settings can be adjusted in the configuration menu.
