About
Custer's Revenge is an adult-only action game for the Atari 2600, published by Mystique in 1982. It uses a fictionalized version of U.S. Army officer George Armstrong Custer, who was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
The game’s central premise is the sexual assault of a Native American woman who is tied to a post. Its setting and character imagery rely on stereotyped depictions of Native American people.
Using a joystick, the player moves Custer left and right across the screen while avoiding flying arrows. In two of the four game modes, cacti appear as additional hazards. Reaching the woman and pressing the fire button repeatedly awards points.
There are one- and two-player versions. The game begins with three lives; collisions with arrows or cacti cost a life, while every 50 points earns a bonus life. Arrow speed increases as play progresses, and the Atari 2600 difficulty switch can raise the starting speed.
Women's and Native American organizations protested the game in 1982, objecting to its portrayal of sexual violence, racism, and sexism. The controversy brought public demonstrations and attempts by local governments to restrict its sale.
