About
Released for the Atari 2600 in 1983, Strawberry Shortcake: Musical Match-Ups is a one-player puzzle game from Parker Brothers. The cartridge was aimed at children ages four to seven and uses a standard joystick.
The Purple Pieman has scrambled the Strawberryland talent show. Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Lime Chiffon, and the Purple Pieman appear as mixed-up figures in the gazebo, and the player's task is to put their heads, bodies, and legs back into matching sets.
Move through the three character sections with the joystick, then press the fire button to test the completed figure. A correct match performs a dance to that character's musical theme. An incorrect combination produces a tune assembled from the themes attached to the selected pieces.
The six game variations build on the same matching activity. The early options have no time limit, while later challenges name a target character or set a deadline marked by Mr. Sun crossing the sky. The final variations ask the player to identify the target from its theme song instead of an on-screen name.
Musical Match-Ups makes its sound cues part of the puzzle rather than simply background music. Learning each character's melody helps with the advanced games, which combine listening, visual recognition, and joystick selection.
Parker Brothers both developed and published the game, with Dawn Stockbridge credited as its programmer. It remains an early licensed Strawberry Shortcake game built specifically around the 1980s Strawberryland characters.
