About
BS Tantei Club: Yuki ni Kieta Kako for Satellaview is a Japanese-only detective adventure broadcast by Nintendo in February 1997. Its title can be rendered as BS Detective Club: The Past That Vanished in the Snow. Rather than a conventional cartridge release, it was made for Satellaview, the satellite-broadcast service used with the Super Famicom. The production is a three-part SoundLink story and belongs to the Famicom Detective Club line, presenting an original case centered on the series character Ayumi Tachibana.
Ayumi, an investigator associated with the Utsugi Detective Agency, returns to the snowy village near her family home to see her mother, Toshie, while she recuperates. The visit becomes a murder investigation when the former village mayor, Gozo Kusano, is found dead. Toshie discovered the body and is drawn into police suspicion, leaving Ayumi with a deeply personal reason to examine the case. The inquiry brings the longstanding tension between the Tachibana and Kusano families into view, alongside a local legend and unanswered deaths from eighteen years earlier.
Like Nintendo's earlier Famicom Detective Club adventures, the game uses a command-driven investigation format. Players inspect illustrated locations, question people, and select points of interest with a hand-shaped cursor. A side menu provides actions for pursuing leads, including speaking to characters, keeping notes, and making telephone calls. Progress comes from revisiting locations and conversations as new information emerges, so individual clues, character accounts, and the changing understanding of the village all matter to the mystery.
Its SoundLink presentation is the defining Satellaview feature. The three chapters were transmitted as scheduled broadcasts, with accompanying streamed audio designed for the original airings. That format gave the detective story voiced material while also making each broadcast a time-specific event rather than a normal retail adventure. The opening chapter began on February 9, 1997; the following installments continued the case over the next two weeks. Yuko Minaguchi voiced Ayumi, a role she later returned to for the 2021 Nintendo Switch remakes of the earlier Famicom Detective Club games.
BS Tantei Club: Yuki ni Kieta Kako is therefore distinct from both the 1988 Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and the 1989 prequel The Girl Who Stands Behind, as well as their later remakes. It is a separate Satellaview-era episode with Ayumi as its playable lead and a case built around family history, winter imagery, and a closed village community. Because the original service and its broadcast schedule were central to the work, the game remains an unusual chapter in Nintendo's adventure-game history and in the legacy of Satellaview programming.
