About
Space Invaders for the Atari 5200 is Atari's 1982 cartridge adaptation of Taito's landmark 1978 arcade fixed shooter. It brings the alien-invasion premise to Atari's then-new console while remaining a distinct version rather than a simple duplicate of the earlier Atari home releases.
The action is confined to a single screen. The player steers a laser base along the bottom edge and fires upward at a formation of 48 invaders. The formation moves side to side, drops lower after reaching an edge, and becomes more urgent as its numbers thin out.
The objective is to eliminate the formation before it reaches the bottom of the playfield. Enemy fire forces the player to keep moving, while defensive barriers provide temporary cover and can be worn away by incoming shots or the player's own fire. A flying saucer can also cross the top of the screen as an extra target.
Clearing a formation begins another attack wave, so the game is built around survival and score-chasing rather than a final ending. The escalating pace rewards timing, careful use of the barriers, and quick repositioning as the invaders advance.
The 5200 edition was derived from Atari's earlier Atari 8-bit computer version, but it was extensively revised for the console. Its changes included adding barriers and removing the earlier version's introductory alien march, bringing the structure closer to the arcade game.
Artist Marilyn Churchill created the invader movement with a technique she called matrix animation: looping animations were arranged on a grid and selected in varying sequence by the program. The result gives the marching 48-invader formation a more varied, less uniform appearance during play.
