About
Pitfall! for the Atari 5200 is Activision’s 1984 jungle action game starring the fortune hunter Pitfall Harry. Designed by David Crane for Activision’s Pitfall! series, this Atari 5200 edition turns the search for treasure into a timed expedition through a screen-by-screen jungle maze. Harry has 20 minutes and three lives to recover valuables while navigating a route that runs above ground and below it.
The basic goal is clear but demanding: collect all 32 treasures scattered through the jungle’s 255 scenes before time expires. Eight money bags, eight silver bars, eight gold bars, and eight diamond rings make up the haul, with each type worth progressively more points. Harry begins an adventure with 2,000 points, so a clean full-treasure run can reach 114,000. The score gives every detour weight, since some setbacks reduce points even when they do not end a life.
Play centers on reading each new scene quickly and choosing a safe way forward. The Atari 5200 controller moves Harry left and right, climbs ladders by pushing forward or pulling back, and uses the lower red button for jumps and for catching a swinging vine. Its upper red button is used to leap between crocodiles in a swamp, while pulling the stick back releases a vine. Reaching a screen edge replaces it with the next area rather than scrolling the landscape, making navigation and route memory central to a successful run.
The jungle mixes score-draining obstacles with deadlier dangers. Open holes and rolling logs can cost points, but scorpions, fires, cobras, crocodiles, swamps, quicksand, and tar pits take one of Harry’s lives. Ladders and underground passages offer alternate paths through the maze, and swinging vines let him cross hazards or cover ground quickly. That combination makes the challenge more than simply reacting to a single obstacle: players must balance speed, safe jumps, and the route needed to reach every treasure in time.
Pitfall! arrived on the Atari 5200 in March 1984, after the game had established itself on the Atari 2600 and before its follow-up, Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, reached the same system later that year. The 5200 release preserves the original adventure’s recognizable premise—an explorer racing through a perilous jungle for a complete treasure collection—while adapting its controls to the console’s keypad-equipped controller. It remains an early home-console example of a large interconnected playfield built from simple, repeatable movement and hazard mechanics.
