About

X-Men: Children of the Atom for PlayStation is a 2D one-on-one fighting game released by Acclaim Entertainment in 1998. It adapts Capcom's 1994 arcade game, whose original development was led by Capcom, while the PlayStation conversion was handled by Probe Entertainment. Drawing on Marvel's X-Men comics and the era's animated-series character portrayals, this PS1 release brings mutant battles, large character sprites, and the arcade game's fast-paced combat to Sony's console.

The game pits combatants against one another in best-of-three-round matches. Players choose from heroes including Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Iceman, Colossus, and Storm, or enter the fight as opponents such as Omega Red, Spiral, Silver Samurai, and Sentinel. Each character has a separate collection of normal attacks, throws, special techniques, and screen-filling super moves, giving their fights different rhythms and effective ranges. A single-player run advances through a fixed series of computer-controlled rivals before the final confrontations.

Its story is loosely drawn from the X-Men comic storyline Fatal Attractions. Magneto is working toward a disaster that would throw the world into a new dark age, and the X-Men face enemies who have joined his cause. Juggernaut and Magneto serve as the major non-playable opponents at the end of the game. This framing keeps the focus on head-to-head action while providing a reason for the game's mix of X-Men members, adversaries, and comic-book locations.

Combat uses Capcom's familiar multi-button fighting-game approach, with attacks of different strengths alongside joystick or directional inputs for special moves. The X-Power gauge fills during battle and supports stronger X-Abilities and Hyper X attacks when enough energy has been built. Players can also use features that set Children of the Atom apart from earlier Capcom fighters, including super jumps, air combos, recovery rolls after being knocked down, and the chance to chase an opponent after a throw. Some projectile attacks can be aimed, adding another layer of positioning to matches.

Stages are more than static backdrops. Several have breakable floors that can send the fighters down to a lower area, changing the space available for the rest of the round. The game also offers manual and automatic blocking options; automatic blocking makes defense more approachable but restricts some other actions. These systems encourage players to balance attacks, movement, meter use, and defense instead of relying on a single repeated move.

The PlayStation edition arrived after the arcade original and Sega Saturn port, and it is a distinct conversion rather than a direct arcade-equivalent release. To fit the game on PlayStation hardware, it uses reduced animation compared with the arcade version and can show slowdown in busy exchanges. It nonetheless preserves the roster, central match structure, X-Power system, special attacks, and multi-level arenas that define the game. The North American and European PlayStation releases were published by Acclaim; unlike the Japanese Saturn version, this PlayStation version was not released in Japan.

Children of the Atom is an important early chapter in Capcom's Marvel fighting-game work. Its rapid aerial combat, long combo possibilities, super-meter attacks, and comic-inspired presentation established ideas Capcom would develop further in later Marvel crossover fighters. For PS1 players, X-Men: Children of the Atom remains a console adaptation of the game that launched Capcom's long-running line of Marvel-based versus games.
