About

Nobunaga no Yabou: Returns is Koei's historical strategy game for the original PlayStation, released in Japan on August 2, 1996. A remake of the 1983 first entry in the long-running Nobunaga's Ambition series, it revisits Koei's early vision of Japan's Sengoku period—the era of rival warlords and shifting territorial power. Rather than following a fixed protagonist-led story, the game puts the player in the position of a daimyo seeking to bring the country under one rule.

The campaign is built around governing a domain before taking its army into conflict. Players select a feudal lord, including Oda Nobunaga or Takeda Shingen, and work toward control of the regions represented by the game. Building up a territory is as important as choosing when to fight: a stronger realm needs the resources to support its forces, while military success opens the way to further expansion. The central challenge is balancing domestic management with the risks and opportunities of war.

As a turn-based strategy experience, Nobunaga no Yabou: Returns proceeds through decisions on the map and battles against neighboring clans. The player prepares forces, attacks adjacent opponents, and aims to defeat them in order to extend their influence. Its relatively focused geographic scope—17 areas in the Kansai and central-Japan region—makes this a concentrated take on the unification theme, centered on a chain of regional rivalries instead of a sprawling map of the entire country.

Returns preserves the foundational premise that made Nobunaga's Ambition distinctive: political and economic choices feed directly into military ambitions. The goal is not simply to win individual engagements, but to create a domain capable of sustaining a campaign of conquest. Choosing a different daimyo changes the starting position from which that ambition begins, giving the historical setting a strategic rather than purely narrative role.

Koei developed and published the PlayStation version, which updated the original game's presentation with three-dimensional visuals while retaining its historical-simulation identity. It followed earlier versions of Returns for Windows 3.1 and Sega Saturn, and later appeared on other 1996 hardware. For players exploring the beginnings of Koei's strategy catalog, this PlayStation release offers a remake of the series' original design: a compact struggle to develop a clan, outmaneuver neighboring powers, and pursue the unification of feudal Japan.
