About

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys for Super NES is a side-scrolling action role-playing game released in 1992, adapted from Nihon Falcom's 1989 third Ys adventure. This Super NES version was developed by Advance Communication Company and published by Tonkin House in Japan, with an English-language release in North America. It follows red-haired swordsman Adol Christin and his traveling companion Dogi as they arrive in Dogi's troubled hometown of Redmont, in the land of Felghana.

The journey begins when danger surrounding Ballacetine Castle reaches Redmont. Adol takes on the task of finding the source of the crisis and protecting the villagers, moving between the town, wilderness routes, mines, ruins, caves, and enemy strongholds. Conversations with residents provide direction, while plot developments send him after important objects and eventually toward the forces threatening the region. The story is a self-contained chapter in Adol's long-running travels, set after the events of Ys I and II.

Rather than using the top-down, contact-based combat associated with the first two Ys games, this installment presents its action from the side. Adol can run, jump, climb, and swing his sword with a button press, making spacing and timing central to encounters. Ordinary enemies appear across connected outdoor and dungeon areas, while larger bosses demand observation of attack patterns and careful positioning. The change gives Ys III: Wanderers from Ys on SNES a platform-action character while retaining the series' role-playing structure.

Defeated enemies award experience, allowing Adol to gain levels and improve his ability to survive increasingly dangerous areas. Shops and found equipment supply stronger weapons, armor, and other useful gear, and progress also depends on carrying the right key items to the next location. Magic is represented through rings powered by Ring Power; their effects can support offense, recovery, or defense. These systems encourage preparation between major sections without turning the adventure into a menu-heavy role-playing game.

The Super NES release is one of several substantially different console adaptations of Wanderers from Ys. Falcom's original was made for Japanese home computers, followed by versions for systems including the TurboGrafx-CD, Famicom, Genesis/Mega Drive, and Super NES. Although the central quest and side-view approach carry across those editions, the SNES conversion has its own presentation, English terminology, balance, and implementation. In particular, the castle is called Ballacetine in this version, whereas other editions commonly use Valestein.

Ys III also marks an early and unusual detour in the Ys series' gameplay history: a narrative about Adol, Dogi, and Felghana built around horizontal exploration instead of the overhead format of its immediate predecessors. Its adventure later received a much more extensive remake, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, for Windows and subsequent platforms. The original Super NES game remains a distinct 16-bit interpretation of that chapter, combining direct swordplay, jumping, character growth, ring-based magic, and a compact fantasy quest.
