About

Star Wars: Episode I, Jedi Power Battles for PlayStation is a 2000 LucasArts action game built around the events and worlds of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Published by LucasArts for Sony’s PlayStation, it turns the film’s Naboo-era conflict into a level-by-level lightsaber adventure for one or two players. Instead of retelling every scene literally, the game follows the Jedi through a broad action route from the Trade Federation’s opening trap to the showdown with Darth Maul.

Players begin by choosing from five Jedi: Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, or Adi Gallia. Each character carries a lightsaber and Force-based abilities, while their combat options and strengths give the roster different flavours in play. The central task is to guide a Jedi through hostile territory, cutting through enemy formations, surviving environmental hazards, and reaching the end of each stage. A second player can join the campaign, making the game’s shared-screen cooperation a defining part of the PlayStation experience.

Lightsaber combat provides the game’s basic rhythm. Jedi can strike at close range, chain attacks as new moves become available, and turn the saber against incoming blaster fire. Force powers and collectible boosts add further options when battle droids, destroyer droids, creatures, and other opponents crowd the screen. The game also asks players to make careful jumps between platforms and over hazards, so progress depends on timing and positioning as well as defeating enemies.

The campaign travels through locations associated with Episode I, beginning aboard a Trade Federation ship before moving through Naboo and its capital, Theed. Other stages take the action to places including Tatooine and Coruscant as the Jedi protect Naboo’s cause and confront the forces behind the invasion. The final stretch returns the fight to Naboo, where the path through the palace and its generator complex leads to Darth Maul. Familiar figures from the film’s era appear alongside the selectable Jedi, placing the game in the wider prequel setting without requiring players to follow the movie scene by scene.

Jedi Power Battles combines its side-on action with occasional changes of pace. Platforming sections make elevation and route-finding important, and some parts of the journey put players in vehicles rather than on foot. Completing challenges can reveal additional playable characters and bonus content, providing reasons to revisit the adventure with a different Jedi or with a partner. The available heroes are not simply cosmetic choices: their lightsabers, Force techniques, and combat approaches help shape how a stage feels.

The PlayStation version is the original console release of this particular game, while LucasArts later brought a revised edition to Dreamcast and a separate handheld adaptation to Game Boy Advance under the shorter title Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles. Those releases share the basic premise but are not interchangeable with the PlayStation game; the Dreamcast edition added features and technical changes, while the Game Boy Advance version was adapted for a different format. That distinction matters for players looking for the original PlayStation campaign and its specific character roster, stages, cooperative play, and progression.

Released during the large wave of games tied to The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode I, Jedi Power Battles stands apart from racing and flight-focused Star Wars titles of the same period by centring a Jedi-led action adventure. Its mix of saber fights, Force abilities, platforming, unlockables, and couch co-op captures a particular early-2000s approach to a film licence: take recognizable locations and characters, then build a demanding arcade-style quest around them. For PlayStation owners seeking a Star Wars game focused on Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and the battle for Naboo, Jedi Power Battles offers a self-contained journey through the film’s conflict.
