About

Sangokushi Koumeiden for PlayStation is Koei’s 1997 Japanese tactical role-playing game, released as 三國志孔明伝 and based on the Three Kingdoms tradition. It is the second Sangokushi Eiketsuden game, following the Liu Bei-centered Sangokushi Eiketsuden, but its campaign places the celebrated strategist Zhuge Liang at the center. Koei developed and published this PlayStation edition in Japan on February 14, 1997. Rather than the empire-management focus associated with Koei’s main Sangokushi strategy games, it tells its story through a sequence of scenario-based tactical battles.

The campaign draws loosely on Romance of the Three Kingdoms and follows Zhuge Liang’s service to Liu Bei. Its early material concerns the effort to secure Jingzhou and Yizhou and found Shu Han; later chapters cover Zhuge Liang’s southern campaign and his expeditions against Wei. Familiar figures and events from the novel provide the framework, but the game is not a historical simulation in a strict sense. It recasts the era as a character-led military chronicle in which the player guides a commander and a growing roster of officers from battle to battle.

Combat is turn-based and takes place on map-based battlefields. Players move their units, select actions, and work toward each stage’s victory condition, using positioning and the available forces to overcome the opposing army. The PlayStation controls support this deliberate pace: the directional pad moves the cursor and units, Circle confirms choices, X cancels, and shoulder buttons cycle through units during battle. Status, battle menus, and an overview map are also available through dedicated controller buttons, making the strategic information accessible without leaving the encounter.

Koumeiden makes individual battle performance part of the campaign’s larger drama. Before many stages, player choices can change the two sides’ starting deployments, trigger events, and affect which items appear in locations such as armories and granaries. The game also keeps track of factors including Zhuge Liang’s condition, retreats, and battle restarts. Taking too long at key points or repeatedly withdrawing can weaken him, so the tactical maps are not merely isolated skirmishes; their outcomes and the way they are completed can shape the route toward the conclusion.

This emphasis on branching consequences distinguishes the game from a simple retelling. Depending on progress and decisions, the story can depart from the familiar sequence of events, including alternative outcomes around major Shu figures. One later feature concerns Zhuge Liang’s son, Zhuge Zhan: during the third and fourth chapters, the player can influence how his abilities develop and later select his unit class before he joins the final chapter. These choices connect long-term character planning with the narrative’s changing possibilities.

The PlayStation version was one of several releases of Sangokushi Koumeiden. The game first appeared for Japanese computers in 1996, then reached PlayStation in 1997 alongside a Sega Saturn version; a Game Boy Advance edition followed years later. The console versions add stages and small story changes compared with the earlier computer release. The original PlayStation disc, catalogued as SLPS-00688, is a Japanese-language, single-player release; Koei later reissued it in budget lines, including Koei The Best.

For players exploring Koei’s Three Kingdoms catalogue, Sangokushi Koumeiden occupies a specific place between historical fiction and tactical RPG design. It is connected to the broader Sangokushi/Romance of the Three Kingdoms family, yet its focus stays close to Zhuge Liang’s personal campaign and battlefield decisions rather than asking the player to govern an entire state. Its tactical maps, scenario progression, alternate developments, and character-growth elements make it a distinctive PlayStation interpretation of one of East Asia’s most enduring historical epics.
