About
Initial D is a Japan-only PlayStation racing game released by Kodansha on January 7, 1999. It is a distinct early console adaptation of Shuichi Shigeno’s street-racing manga, not one of Sega’s later Initial D Arcade Stage games or the PlayStation 2, PSP, and PlayStation 3 releases that followed. Kodansha is credited as both developer and publisher for this PS1 edition, whose original Japanese product number is SLPS-01793; a budget PlayStation the Best reissue arrived in Japan in 2000.
The game draws its setting and competitive spirit from Initial D, a series centred on mountain-pass driving in Gunma and on the skill of maintaining speed through demanding corners. Its story mode uses cinematic video and computer-generated stills to frame a sequence of races. It covers the early portion of the source material, beginning around Takumi Fujiwara’s routine tofu deliveries and progressing through the arrival of Team Emperor. That focus gives the game the shape of an early-series adaptation rather than an all-encompassing franchise history.
Driving is built around touge-style road racing and the need to learn individual courses. Acceleration, steering, braking, and controlled drifting all matter when carrying momentum through bends. The game includes both uphill and downhill versions of its routes, so a familiar location can demand a different approach when the direction changes. Some events also introduce wet conditions, altering the feel of the handling and making course knowledge especially valuable.
Story mode is joined by free-race, practice, and two-player options. Free racing lets a player concentrate on personal times, while practice provides a lower-pressure way to understand the layout and behaviour of each course. The multiplayer option supports a computer-controlled rival or a second player in split-screen play. Replays can be viewed after races, giving drivers a way to revisit their run and see how a line through a corner affected the result.
As a PlayStation release from the period before Sega’s 2001 arcade debut, Initial D has its own place in the franchise’s game history. Its presentation uses the limitations and style of late-1990s console hardware while retaining the manga’s cars, mountain roads, rivalries, and emphasis on drifting. For players interested in the earliest home-console interpretations of Initial D, this 1999 Kodansha production is a focused snapshot of the series before its long-running arcade identity took shape.
