About
EarthBound is the North American title of Mother 2, the second game in Shigesato Itoi’s Mother series. Developed by Ape Inc. with HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, it arrived for the Super NES in North America in June 1995. Its brightly colored world, offbeat humor, and emotional turns make it a distinctive take on the 16-bit role-playing game.
The adventure begins when a meteorite lands near the home of Ness, a young boy from the ordinary suburban town of Onett. A warning about the alien force Giygas sends Ness across the country and beyond, where he searches for eight Sanctuaries and gathers the strength to face the threat. Familiar places such as houses, drugstores, arcades, schools, and roadside towns give the quest a deliberately modern, Americana-inspired setting.
Ness is eventually joined by Paula, Jeff, and Poo, each bringing a different role to the four-person party. Paula and Poo use PSI abilities for attack, recovery, and support, while Jeff relies on his inventions and equipment rather than psychic powers. Their travels move through towns, wilderness, dungeons, and stranger locations, with NPC conversations and unusual enemies establishing EarthBound’s playful personality.
Combat is turn-based, but the rolling HP counter gives battles an important sense of urgency. After a major hit, health ticks downward instead of disappearing at once, allowing a quick heal or a winning attack to save a character before the total reaches zero. Enemies can also surrender or flee when Ness’s party becomes much stronger, which helps make earlier areas faster to revisit.
PSI points fuel special techniques, while food, medicines, tools, and battle items occupy the party’s limited individual inventories. Managing who carries a useful item and when to spend restorative supplies is part of the journey, especially before long stretches away from a town. Shops, hotels, phone calls, and visits to Ness’s family turn everyday routines into practical RPG systems.
As Mother 2, EarthBound follows the original Mother—later released in English as EarthBound Beginnings—and it precedes the Japan-only Mother 3. The SNES release introduced many English-speaking players to the series’ mix of childhood perspective, comedy, and cosmic stakes. Its blend of approachable turn-based mechanics and a setting unlike traditional fantasy RPGs has made it a lasting cult favorite.
