About
Brigandine: Grand Edition is a Japanese PlayStation strategy RPG released on May 18, 2000. Developed by Hearty Robin and published in Japan by Atlus, it is an expanded edition of the original Brigandine rather than the 1998 North American release, Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena. The game returns to the fantasy continent of Forsena, where rival nations struggle for control after the kingdom of Almekia falls to the rebellion led by Zemeckis and is remade as the Esgares Empire.
The player chooses a nation and tries to unite the continent by seizing enemy castles. Each realm is supported by Rune Knights, character units who lead squads of summoned creatures. A nation must balance its castle defenses with invasions into neighboring territory, deciding where to station its forces before committing an army to an assault. The campaign advances in monthly turns, giving the strategic map as much importance as individual battles.
Preparation is built around managing a kingdom's resources and personnel. Castles supply mana, which pays for new monsters and the upkeep of existing ones. Rune Knights can organize troops, equip and use items, change class when requirements are met, and send subordinates on quests that may produce useful results while temporarily taking those knights out of service. Monsters can gain levels and promote into stronger forms, while a knight's Rune Power limits how many creatures that leader can effectively command.
When armies clash, Brigandine: Grand Edition shifts to turn-based combat on hexagonal maps. A unit generally moves and then attacks, uses magic, or performs a special action, while the linked troops of a Rune Knight take their turns in sequence. Positioning matters because monsters operate best inside their leader's Rune Area; losing or withdrawing the Rune Knight can leave their creatures vulnerable to retreat or capture. Elemental affinities, unit statistics, spells, terrain, and the limited number of rounds available to an attacker all shape the decision to press an attack or protect a force for another month.
Grand Edition substantially revises the original game's package. Esgares becomes a playable nation with its own story material, and the game adds Rune Knights, classes, monsters, items, voice acting, new animated scenes, a revised soundtrack, and an ending confrontation after the continent is conquered. Its battle rules also adjust elemental relationships, allow monsters to use equipment, and grant an attacker victory at the time limit if a unit occupies the defending castle. In place of the original version's 3D opening and battle presentation, Grand Edition uses an anime-style opening and faster 2D battle animations.
A separate multiplayer mode lets as many as six players each command a nation, extending the territorial contest beyond the single-player campaigns. This makes the PlayStation release a broader version of Forsena's Rune Knight warfare, combining long-term kingdom administration with tactical encounters where every castle, squad composition, and retreat can alter the balance of the continent. Brigandine: Grand Edition remained a Japanese release, with its PlayStation menus and gameplay presented in Japanese.
