About

Alone in the Dark: Jack Is Back for PlayStation is Infogrames’ 1996 console adaptation of the 1993 computer game Alone in the Dark 2. Released in Europe under the Jack Is Back title, it is the second main entry in the series and puts supernatural investigator Edward Carnby back on a case in a stylised 1920s America. North American PlayStation players received the same game as Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack’s Revenge. This PlayStation release should not be confused with Jack in the Dark, the much shorter puzzle-focused promotional adventure that accompanied some earlier computer editions.

Carnby is called to investigate the disappearance of his fellow detective Ted Stryker while looking into the abduction of young Grace Saunders. The trail leads to Hell’s Kitchen, the sprawling home of notorious gangster One-Eyed Jack. What begins as a hard-boiled missing-person case soon uncovers a more fantastic danger: Jack and his armed associates are bound to a centuries-old pirate past and a supernatural source of protection. Carnby’s task is to stay alive, uncover the gang’s secret, and rescue Grace from a house where criminal intrigue and occult menace meet.

The PlayStation game mixes exploration, environmental puzzles, item management, and combat. Players guide Carnby through fixed-camera rooms and outdoor areas, searching furniture and containers, examining clues, and carrying useful objects in an inventory. Weapons range from the detective’s revolver to more powerful firearms and close-range tools, but ammunition and positioning matter when gangsters attack. Progress depends as much on noticing usable objects and solving the next obstacle as it does on surviving encounters, making careful investigation central to the journey through Hell’s Kitchen.

Although Carnby handles most of the adventure, the story also shifts to Grace for selected sequences. She cannot simply confront the adult gangsters as Carnby can; instead, those sections ask players to keep her out of sight and use the surroundings to create diversions or traps. This change of perspective gives the rescue plot a practical role in play rather than leaving Grace only as an off-screen objective. The wider game moves beyond a single mansion, eventually taking Carnby through its grounds and toward the pirate ship concealed beneath the estate.

Alone in the Dark: Jack Is Back retains the sequel’s blend of pulp detective fiction, gangsters, pirates, and supernatural horror, a different emphasis from the first game’s isolated haunted-house scenario. For the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions, Infogrames reworked the character presentation with fully textured polygonal models and added FMV scenes, giving the 1996 conversion a distinct audiovisual identity from the original DOS release. The game remains a useful snapshot of the series’ early development: an adventure built around cinematic angles and inventory puzzles, but expanded with more locations, firearms, and a two-character structure.
