About
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars on PlayStation is Revolution Software’s story-led point-and-click adventure, based on the original 1996 game and brought to Sony’s console during the late 1990s. In North America, the first release was also known as Circle of Blood, while other territories used the Broken Sword title and their own localized names. It begins in Paris, where American visitor George Stobbart survives a bombing at a café and is drawn into an investigation that reaches far beyond the city.
George’s search soon brings him together with French photojournalist Nicole Collard. Their leads connect a sequence of killings, stolen artifacts, and a modern conspiracy built around imagery and legends associated with the Knights Templar. The pair’s investigation moves through Paris and onward to locations in Ireland, Syria, Spain, and Scotland. Rather than presenting history as fact, the game uses its medieval references as the foundation for a fictional modern mystery, balancing suspense with dry humor and conversations with an eccentric supporting cast.
The PlayStation game keeps the series’ third-person adventure format. Players guide George through hand-drawn locations, inspect scenery, speak with characters, collect useful objects, and use or combine inventory items to clear obstacles. Conversations provide much of the information needed to understand both the investigation and the puzzles, while newly discovered destinations are added to a map as the trail expands. Progress depends on observation and deduction: a casual remark, a document, a location detail, or an item found in one place may be the key to the next step elsewhere.
This version is a console conversion of the original rather than the later Director’s Cut. It retains George as the playable lead and the classic scene-by-scene structure, including voiced dialogue, animated sequences, and Barrington Pheloung’s orchestral score. The PlayStation edition supports the PlayStation Mouse for players who want a closer fit to its computer-style interface, while its standard controller setup adapts the same object selection and movement-driven puzzle solving for the console. Its original releases also had regional publishing differences: Sony Computer Entertainment handled the console release in some markets, while THQ later issued the North American PlayStation release under the Broken Sword name.
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars is the first entry in the Broken Sword series and establishes the partnership between George and Nicole that continued in later adventures. Its 2D animated presentation, globe-spanning investigation, and emphasis on dialogue and inventory puzzles place it firmly in the tradition of 1990s graphic adventures, while its PlayStation release made that style of game available to a console audience. Later editions and remakes expanded or revised parts of the experience, but the PS1 game remains the original adventure’s console form, centered on its Parisian opening and its hunt for the secret behind the title’s broken sword.
