About

007: The World Is Not Enough is a PlayStation first-person shooter from Electronic Arts, developed by Black Ops Entertainment and released in November 2000. It adapts the 1999 James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan, placing players in the role of 007 as an investigation into the murder of oil magnate Sir Robert King expands into a threat involving a vast pipeline. This is specifically the PS1 game, not the separately developed Nintendo 64 title with the same name. Black Ops had previously made the PlayStation adaptation of Tomorrow Never Dies, and built this follow-up as a different kind of Bond adventure.

The campaign uses a first-person view and sends Bond through 11 missions that turn the film's premise into an objective-driven action story. Missions ask for more than eliminating guards: Bond may have to rescue hostages, recover evidence, sabotage equipment, escape danger, or reach a particular destination. The game also introduces situations and characters beyond the movie in order to give its levels their own action set pieces. Briefings, dialogue, and clips from the film help frame the missions between firefights.

Bond's equipment is central to the PlayStation version's espionage flavor. Alongside pistols, submachine guns, shotguns, a sniper rifle, a tranquilizer gun, and heavier weapons, players use gadgets to solve specific problems. The Credit Card Lockpick can open secured doors, while the Micro Camera is used to photograph evidence. Ammunition must be managed through reloads, health falls under enemy fire, and Light and Heavy Armor pickups offer extra protection, although they do not prevent every hazard. One casino sequence shifts away from shooting entirely and asks Bond to win at blackjack.

Black Ops changed the perspective of its earlier Tomorrow Never Dies engine from third person to first person, then expanded the technology with new animations, scripted moments, sound effects, and a revised renderer intended to improve draw distance while maintaining performance. The result is a PlayStation-era shooter designed around corridors, rooms, exterior spaces, and interactive objectives rather than an open world. Its presentation also uses full-motion-video excerpts from the movie, CD-quality music, and spoken dialogue to bring the Bond license into the console's audiovisual style.

The game is often confused with The World Is Not Enough on Nintendo 64, but the two releases are distinct productions. Eurocom developed the Nintendo 64 game, whereas Black Ops created the PlayStation version; they have different mission structures and design choices despite drawing from the same film. The PS1 edition is a single-player experience and does not include multiplayer. A multiplayer mode was considered during development, but it was dropped so the team could concentrate its production time on the campaign.

Reception at the time was mixed. Reviewers commonly regarded it as an improvement over Tomorrow Never Dies and noted the variety created by its gadgets, objectives, and locations, while also criticizing its brevity, basic enemy behavior, and limited replay value. The absence of multiplayer was another frequent point of comparison with contemporary console shooters. Even so, its mixture of weapons, mission tasks, film clips, and recognizable 007 tools gives the PlayStation release a clear identity within the crowded run of James Bond games.

For players exploring PS1 shooters or Bond adaptations, 007: The World Is Not Enough captures an early attempt to translate cinematic espionage into an objective-led first-person format. Its campaign combines direct firefights with gadget use and occasional non-combat tasks, making it a notable companion to the more widely discussed Nintendo 64 game rather than a port of it. The Black Ops-developed version remains a standalone piece of the PlayStation Bond catalogue, built around a single-player mission progression and the technology of its original console.
