About

Warriors Orochi for PSP is a 2008 hack-and-slash action game from Omega Force and Koei. Released in Japan as Musou Orochi in February 2008 and in North America on March 25, it brings together the casts and battlefield style of Dynasty Warriors 5 and Samurai Warriors 2 for a portable crossover. The story begins when the Serpent King Orochi tears open a rift in time and space, creating a warped world where heroes from China’s Three Kingdoms era and Japan’s Sengoku period are forced into the same conflict.

The central activity is the large-scale Warriors formula: select officers, enter a sprawling battlefield, cut through formations of enemy soldiers, seize positions, and respond to the changing needs of a battle. Officers are more dangerous than ordinary troops, while allied morale, reinforcements, gates, and mission events can change the flow of a stage. Rather than following either source series in isolation, Warriors Orochi mixes their locations, factions, and dramatic rivalries into scenarios shaped by Orochi’s invasion.

Its defining system is the three-character Team Battle party. Before a mission, players assemble a group from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors rosters and can swap the active warrior during combat. The two resting teammates recover health and Musou energy while off the field, making well-timed changes useful when a character is under pressure or when a different weapon and move set suits the situation. A defeated active warrior still ends the battle, so team selection and resource management matter alongside crowd-clearing attacks.

Characters are divided into Power, Technique, and Speed types, giving the large roster different strengths and special options. Power fighters emphasize force, Technique fighters have access to counter-focused moves, and Speed fighters are built around faster movement and aerial mobility. Each warrior retains an individual weapon style and can gain experience and abilities over the course of play. Weapon Fusion lets players combine attributes from several weapons for the same character, offering a long-term way to tailor equipment instead of simply discarding every earlier find.

Warriors Orochi includes four story routes—Shu, Wei, Wu, and a Samurai Warriors campaign—whose separate battles introduce alliances and resistance forces opposing Orochi. Zhao Yun, Cao Pi, the Sun family, Nobunaga Oda, Shingen Takeda, and Kenshin Uesugi are among the historical figures reimagined through the game’s fantasy premise. The playable lineup contains 79 characters drawn largely from the two parent games, alongside Orochi and Da Ji. Completing stages expands available characters and content, while Free Mode allows previously cleared stages to be revisited with eligible warriors.

This PSP version adapts the 2007 PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 game for Sony’s handheld system. It preserves the crossover’s rapid switching, weapon development, and campaign structure while adding portable play, and it supports two-player wireless cooperative battles. As the first Warriors Orochi, it established the series’ core idea of combining Koei’s Chinese and Japanese historical-action worlds in a single Musou-style campaign, laying the foundation for later entries built around increasingly broad crossover rosters.
