About

Ys Seven for PSP is a 2009 action role-playing game from Nihon Falcom, released in Japan as Ys SEVEN and brought to North America by XSEED Games in 2010. The seventh numbered adventure in the long-running Ys series follows red-haired traveler Adol Christin and his longtime companion Dogi after they reach the kingdom of Altago. Built specifically for PlayStation Portable, it moves the series into a larger journey across towns, wilderness areas, ruins, and dangerous dungeons while retaining the immediate, real-time action that defines Ys.

Altago is a land shaped by old conflicts, regional communities, and the legend of the Five Great Dragons. Shortly after their arrival in the capital, Adol and Dogi become entangled with the Dragon Knights and are summoned by King Kiemarl to investigate earthquakes and other strange disturbances. The ensuing quest takes the party beyond the city and into settlements associated with Altago's different peoples. Adol gathers allies along the way, including the Dragon Knight Aisha and merchant Mustafa, as the mystery surrounding the dragons and a looming catastrophe steadily expands.

Combat unfolds directly on field maps rather than in separate battle screens. Players travel with an active group of up to three characters, control one member at a time, and can switch among them during exploration or a fight. The remaining companions act under computer control, making the party system central to the game rather than a simple menu feature. This also makes Dogi, previously best known as Adol's traveling partner, a regular playable fighter alongside the new cast.

Every combatant uses one of three attack categories: slashing, striking, or piercing. Enemy traits make particular categories more useful in different situations, encouraging players to choose the right character instead of relying on a single all-purpose approach. Weapon-linked skills consume SP, which can be restored through attacks, while repeated use lets skills become more familiar to a character. Charged attacks, enemy stun states, and powerful Extra Skills add further choices during fast boss encounters and ordinary skirmishes.

Defense matters as much as offense in Ys Seven. Characters can evade with a directional movement, but the game's Flash Guard rewards a precisely timed block just before a hit lands. A successful guard negates the attack, improves access to combat resources, and sets up a stronger counterattack; a mistimed attempt leaves the character exposed. Together with character switching and the enemy-specific attack categories, the mechanic gives the PSP game a rhythm of observation, positioning, and quick responses. Outside battle, optional quests, material gathering, and equipment-related activities give players reasons to revisit Altago's populated areas.

Ys Seven was a notable change for the series as Falcom's first original Ys game designed for PSP. Its three-character party, switchable real-time combat, weapon types, learnable skills, and Flash Guard established a foundation that Falcom revisited in later party-era entries such as Ys: Memories of Celceta, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. A Chinese Windows conversion appeared in 2012, while XSEED issued a separate international Windows port in 2017 with higher-resolution presentation, 60 frames per second, configurable controls, achievements, and a revised English script. For PSP players, though, this Altago adventure remains the handheld debut of that influential modern Ys structure.
