About
Utawarerumono Portable is the 2009 Japanese PlayStation Portable edition of Aquaplus's fantasy tactical role-playing and visual-novel adventure. Released in Japan on May 28, 2009, it brings the console version of the first Utawarerumono story to Sony's handheld. The PSP release is a Japanese-language single-player game, combining long-form narrated scenes with turn-based battles rather than treating either element as a separate mode.
The story follows Hakuowlo, an injured man discovered near a remote village with no memory of his past and a mask that cannot be removed. Eruruu and her family nurse him back to health, and his new life among the villagers becomes the starting point for a conflict with their local ruler. As events widen beyond the village, Hakuowlo gathers allies, leads a rebellion, and must confront both the responsibilities of rule and the unanswered questions surrounding his identity.
Most of Utawarerumono Portable is experienced through dialogue and narration, letting the plot and its large ensemble of companions carry the game between battles. Player choices can alter the order in which certain scenes appear, while the main story remains fixed. This structure makes the game a blend of character-focused adventure and strategy RPG: quiet conversations, political developments, and personal relationships establish the stakes before the party enters combat.
Battles are turn-based engagements on square grids. Units take turns moving, attacking, and using magic as objectives demand, whether that means defeating opponents or reaching a designated location. Combat also uses timed follow-up inputs during attacks: successful inputs extend an attack sequence, and capable characters can eventually use finishing moves. Participation and victories earn battle points that can be spent to strengthen characters, making the tactical roster more capable as the campaign progresses.
The PSP version belongs to the console branch of the original 2002 Windows game, following the 2006 PlayStation 2 release that removed the adult content of the first PC edition and added full voice acting and other revisions. Its title, うたわれるもの PORTABLE, identifies it as the handheld release of that story rather than a new sequel. On PSP, players can select a wide presentation suited to the handheld screen or a 4:3 normal display option.
Utawarerumono Portable is rooted in the opening chapter of the wider Utawarerumono series, whose later games return to its world and themes. Its mix of a masked amnesiac protagonist, a growing found-family cast, nation-building conflict, and grid-based tactical encounters gives the PSP game a distinctive place among Japanese story-driven strategy RPGs. For players interested in the series' beginnings, this portable edition presents the complete early tale in a format designed for the PlayStation Portable.
