About
Uta no Prince Sama: Sweet Serenade for PSP is a Japanese otome visual novel and fan disc released by Broccoli on February 10, 2011. Developed by Nippon Ichi Software, it returns to the music-and-romance setting of Uta no Prince-sama after the original game’s graduation audition. The player takes the role of aspiring composer Haruka Nanami, whose partnership with an idol candidate has already carried her through the academy’s big competition. Rather than retelling the first game, Sweet Serenade continues from that point and turns its attention to composing, romance, and the pressures that remain after an important victory.
Haruka begins the story in a relationship with her chosen partner, with the academy headmaster having accepted the pair. A new assignment soon gives the couple a shared goal: they must create a new song. Sweet Serenade centers its main routes on S Class students Tokiya Ichinose, Ren Jinguji, and Syo Kurusu. Its scenario also adds romance routes for teachers Ringo Tsukimiya and Ryuya Hyuga, broadening the cast beyond the three student partners. The story uses the familiar Saotome Academy environment to frame quieter relationship scenes as the characters negotiate misunderstandings, encouragement, creative work, and their hopes for the future.
Like the earlier Uta no Prince-sama games, this is primarily a text-driven adventure. Players read dialogue and make choices at key moments, then follow the consequences through route-specific scenes and endings. Decisions influence romance- and music-related values, so revisiting a route and choosing differently can lead to changed conversations and alternate outcomes. This structure makes the PSP game a character-focused experience rather than a single linear story: selecting a partner determines the perspective of the romance, while repeated play reveals more of the available scenarios.
Music is part of the game’s play as well as its premise. Chapters include rhythm and performance lessons in which players respond to onscreen prompts in time with the exercise, tying Haruka’s work as a composer to interactive tests. These sequences break up the visual-novel reading and place a practical challenge alongside the choice-based storytelling. Sweet Serenade’s theme song is “Netsujo Serenade,” performed by the voices of Tokiya, Ren, and Syo, reinforcing the title’s focus on the S Class cast and on music as a shared language between the heroine and her partner.
Broccoli issued Uta no Prince Sama: Sweet Serenade on PSP in standard, limited, and Welcome Set editions in Japan. The limited release included a Sweet Book and Sweet Disc, while the Welcome Set bundled the game with the original Uta no Prince-sama and additional items. The standalone Sweet Serenade story was later included with Amazing Aria in Uta no Prince-sama: Amazing Aria & Sweet Serenade LOVE, but the PSP original remains the version built around its own individual follow-up story. For players exploring the early Uta no Prince-sama timeline, it supplies a direct romantic continuation for its featured characters while preserving the series’ blend of composition, idol aspirations, and branching otome storytelling.
