About

Salamander Portable is a PlayStation Portable shoot-'em-up compilation released by Konami in Japan on January 25, 2007. Developed by M2, it gathers five Konami titles connected by the Salamander and Gradius lineage: the arcade games Salamander, Life Force, Salamander 2, and Xexex, alongside the MSX version of Gradius 2, also known as Nemesis II. Rather than presenting one newly created campaign, Salamander Portable gives PSP players a compact library of scrolling shooters spanning more than a decade of Konami arcade and home-computer design.

The collection’s central attraction is Salamander, Konami’s 1986 Gradius spin-off. Players pilot a spaceship through hostile alien territory in stages that alternate between horizontal and vertical scrolling. Enemy formations, narrow passages, environmental hazards, and large bosses demand quick movement and careful use of collected weapon capsules. Its immediate pickup system differs from the familiar Gradius power meter, while the arcade game’s two-ship setup supports cooperative play when two players are available. Life Force is included as a separate game, preserving the Japanese arcade reworking of Salamander and its organic visual theme, altered presentation, and Gradius-style power-up selection.

Salamander 2 carries the series into the 1990s with faster action, more elaborate backdrops, and an expanded weapon system. The game still has players threading spacecraft through dense attacks and dangerous scenery, but it adds separate shield choices and lets the pilots build different arsenals from the colored capsules they collect. Its arcade structure makes repeated attempts part of the experience: a run is a test of route knowledge, reflexes, and knowing when to prioritize survival over a risky power-up. The mixture of side-view and vertically scrolling stages remains one of the features that distinguishes Salamander from the predominantly horizontal Gradius games.

Xexex broadens the package beyond the Salamander name. This 1991 Konami arcade shooter follows the craft Flintlock as it travels through futuristic locations to rescue Princess Elaine from the invader known as Flint. In addition to shots, missiles, and speed upgrades, the ship uses a detachable helper called Flint that can be positioned to attack and protect the player. The inclusion is notable because Salamander Portable marked Xexex’s first home console port. Its detailed arcade presentation and more narrative-driven premise give the compilation a different flavor while retaining the same emphasis on scrolling action and power-up management.

The fifth game, Gradius 2 for MSX, should not be confused with the arcade sequel Gradius II: Gofer’s Ambition. Originally released as Nemesis 2 outside Japan, this home-computer entry has its own stages, progression, and equipment choices. It uses the Gradius series’ trademark power meter, where collecting capsules advances a selection bar and the player chooses when to activate speed, missiles, lasers, shields, or options. Its presence ties Salamander Portable to the wider Gradius family and offers a contrast between an MSX game designed around its original hardware and the arcade releases included beside it.

On PSP, the compilation presents these games as separate selectable titles rather than merging their stories or mechanics. That makes it useful both for short sessions and for comparing Konami’s shooter design across eras: Salamander’s alternating viewpoints, Life Force’s distinctive revision, Salamander 2’s later arcade spectacle, Xexex’s companion mechanic, and the strategic power meter of Gradius 2. Salamander Portable remained a Japanese release, later receiving a budget reissue and a Japanese PlayStation Store version. For the PSP’s library, it stands as a focused anthology of Konami’s scrolling-shooter history rather than a remake or a new Salamander sequel.
