About
FIFA Soccer 08 for PSP brings EA Sports' 2007 football season to Sony's PlayStation Portable. Developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label, it was released in September 2007 in Europe and other territories, with North America receiving it as FIFA Soccer 08 the following month. The handheld edition is an officially licensed association-football simulation built around a large roster of clubs, national sides, leagues, players, kits, and stadium presentation, while shaping its own portable package rather than simply mirroring every feature of the console releases.
A match follows the familiar FIFA structure: select a side, set a formation and tactics, then move the ball through passing, crossing, shooting, tackling, and goalkeeper play in an attempt to outscore the opposition. PSP controls map the essential actions to the face buttons and shoulder controls, while the analogue nub handles player movement. The game supports exhibition matches and competitions for a quick fixture or a longer sequence of matches, and its licensed teams give season-style play recognizable club and international identities.
FIFA Soccer 08 PSP offers single-player play alongside local multiplayer and online competition. Interactive Leagues lets players choose a league and team, take part in scheduled online fixtures, and contribute results to a wider table for their selected side. That connected mode was a notable fit for the season-minded FIFA format, while ad hoc local play kept head-to-head matches available without a television or home console. The PSP release also included a link feature for transferring manager-career data with the PlayStation 2 version when both copies were available.
Manager Mode places the player in charge of a club across a season, balancing team selection, transfers, training, and match results. FIFA 08 added the ability to schedule training through a manager calendar and to arrange up to four pre-season friendlies before the main campaign. Those fixtures provide time to assess lineups before league and cup commitments begin. Outside the management game, tournaments can be configured for knockout and group-style football, giving the handheld version ways to stage custom cups as well as individual matches.
The PSP version also leans into short-form extras designed for portable sessions. Football IQ turns trivia questions about teams, leagues, and countries into a goal-scoring contest: correct answers advance the ball, while mistakes send it back toward the player's own end. Juggling challenges ask players to follow on-screen button prompts and keep the ball aloft, and Wall Attack turns volleys against a target wall into a points game with breakable bricks, bonuses, and different shot heights. Points earned through play can be spent in the in-game EA store on additional kits, balls, stadiums, and teams.
On the pitch, FIFA Soccer 08 PSP retains the series' accessible mix of direct attacks, possession passing, set pieces, and manual defensive switching. Trick moves remain available, and the pace favors an immediate, portable interpretation of FIFA football rather than the separate technology used by the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions. Its UMD holds more than 12,000 players, and the audio presentation includes team-specific crowd chants, commentary from Martin Tyler and Andy Gray, and an EA Trax soundtrack. Music stored on a PSP Memory Stick can also be used through the game's media features.
As part of EA Sports' annual FIFA series, FIFA Soccer 08 arrived during a period when the franchise was being tailored differently across platforms. The PSP release omitted the series-wide Be a Pro mode, but compensated with its own mix of online leagues, mini-games, unlockables, career connectivity, and licensed football content. For a 2007 handheld sports game, it presents a full season of club and international football in a format built for both brief challenges and longer manager-led campaigns.
